TOPIC – CULTURAL PRACTICES FOR GROWING VEGETABLES – AFRICAN SPINACH (TETE) 

 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. identify pre – planning, planting and planting activities.

2. prepare seedbeds and raise seedlings of some vegetables and flowers in the nursery.

3. transplant seedlings of selected crops from the nursery to the field.

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Simple farm tools

2. Seeds of vegetables

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

PRE – PLANTING ACTIVITIES 

1. Clearing of land and uprooting of stumps

2. Preparation of ridges and seedbeds

3. Preparation of nursery beds.

 

PLANTING ACTIVITIES 

1. Selection of seeds and transplanting of seedlings.

2. Planting crops on ridges and beds in the school farm.

 

POST – PLANTING ACTIVITIES 

1. Watering

2. Mulching

3. Thinning and supplying

4. Application of fertilizer or manure

5. Weeding

7. Staking (where applicable)

8. Applicant pesticides

9. Harvesting of crops

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Takes pupils to the school farm and map out the area to be used for the year.

Pupil’s Activities – Clear the land and prepare ridges and beds.

3. Leads pupils to prepare nursery beds and plant some seeds.

4. Guides pupils to transplant seedlings.

Pupil’s Activities – Raise seeds in the nursery and transplant to the field.

5. Guides pupils to carry out post planting activities.

Pupil’s Activities – Carry out post – planting activities as directed by the teacher.

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
