ENTRY BEHAVIOUR
Pupils have previously learned about basic movements in dance, such as walking, running, jumping, hopping, skipping, bending, stretching, turning, clapping, and swaying.
This lesson builds on that knowledge by teaching pupils the meaning and importance of dance, the types of dance, and how to take part in a dance performance.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
People dance during weddings, festivals, religious celebrations, cultural events, and school activities. Dancing helps people express joy, celebrate special occasions, exercise their bodies, and preserve their culture.
In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of dance, the importance of dance, the different types of dance, and how to participate in a simple dance performance.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF DANCE
Dance is the rhythmic movement of the body to music, songs, or drum beats to express feelings, tell stories, celebrate events, worship, or entertain people.
Dance is an important part of Nigerian culture and is performed during festivals, ceremonies, celebrations, and other social events.
IMPORTANCE OF DANCE
Dance is important because it:
1. Provides entertainment.
2. Preserves Nigerian culture and traditions.
3. Promotes physical fitness and good health.
4. Expresses feelings and emotions.
5. Builds self-confidence.
6. Encourages teamwork and cooperation.
7. Promotes unity and friendship.
8. Develops body coordination and balance.
9. Creates employment for dancers and entertainers.

TYPES OF DANCE
1. Traditional Dance – Traditional dance is a dance passed down from one generation to another. It shows the traditions and customs of a community.
Example: Bata Dance, Atilogwu Dance.
2. Cultural Dance – Cultural dance is a dance performed to show and preserve the culture of a people.
Example: Ekombi Dance, Swange Dance.
3. Modern Dance – Modern dance is a dance performed to modern music. It is popular among young people.
Example: Hip-hop.
4. Religious Dance – Religious dance is a dance performed during worship or religious celebrations.
Example: Church praise dance.
5. Social Dance – Social dance is a dance performed for fun during social events and celebrations.
Example: Wedding dance, birthday party dance.
LESSON 3 – DANCE PERFORMANCE
A dance performance is the presentation of a dance before an audience using coordinated body movements, music, costumes, facial expressions, and appropriate dance steps.

SUMMARY
