TOPIC: Classes of Food

Food is what people and animals eat to survive. The food we eat usually comes from animals or plants. It gives us energy and nutrition. It contains the nutrition that people needed to be healthy.

The consumption of food is enjoyable to humans. If someone cannot afford food they go hungry.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

  • By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and be able to:
  1. explain the meaning of meal planning;
  2. identify three major meals of the day;
  3. identify the right foods for each meal;
  4. plan simple breakfast, lunch and supper/dinner.

ENTRY BEHAVIOR

  • The pupils are required to already have LEARNED classification of foods.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

  • The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:
  1. Charts on food nutrients;
  2. Charts on food groups;
  3. Charts on adequate diet.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

TYPES OF FOOD 

Basic foods consumed by humans:

  • Plant 
  1. Fruit – orange, mango  pineapple, apple, etc.
  2. Vegetables – ugu, ewdu, okro, bitter leaf, water leaf, etc.
  3. Grains – rice, bean, millet, maize, guineas corn, etc.
  4. Seeds – dates, groundnuts, cashew nuts, peanut, tiger nuts, walnuts,
  5. Legumes – Beans, peas, lentils, etc.
  6. Herbs and Spices – shea butter, spring onions, basil leaf, Lennon grass, curry, salt, sugar, etc.
  • Animals
  1. Meat – goats, cows, sheep, turkey, chickens, etc.
  2. Seafood – fish, crab, crayfish, snails, etc.
  3. Eggs
  4. Dairy products – milk.

USES OF FOODS

PRESENTATION

  • To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
  1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
  2. Guides the pupils in discussing food;
  3. Pupil’s Activities – Participate in class discussion;
  4. Discusses the types of food and uses;
  5. Pupil’s Activities – Discuss types of foods and uses.
  6. Provides simple chart of foods;
  7. Pupil’s Activities – Observe the charts on display.

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

  2. state four guidelines for healthy living;
  3. name the three meals of a day;
