CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
People dance for many reasons, such as celebration, worship, entertainment, exercise, and cultural festivals. Different communities and countries have their own unique styles of dance. Nigeria is rich in traditional dances and has also produced many famous dancers who have promoted Nigerian dance around the world.
In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of dance, the different forms of dance, some notable Nigerian dancers, and participate in a simple dance demonstration.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF DANCE
Dance is the movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music, for expression, communication, entertainment, worship, celebration, or exercise.
TYPES (FORMS) OF DANCE
The common forms of dance include:
1. Traditional Dance – Dances that reflect the culture and customs of a community.
2. Contemporary Dance – A modern style of dance that combines different dance techniques.
3. Ballet Dance – A formal dance performed with graceful movements and special techniques.
4. Hip-hop Dance – A modern energetic dance commonly performed to hip-hop music.
5. Social Dance – Dances performed during parties, weddings, and social gatherings.
6. Religious Dance – Dances performed during worship or religious ceremonies.
LESSON 2 – NOTABLE NIGERIAN DANCERS
Some well-known Nigerian dancers include:
1. Kafayat Shafau – Kafayat Shafau, popularly known as Kaffy, is a Nigerian professional dancer, choreographer, dance instructor, and fitness coach. She is one of Nigeria’s most famous dancers and has trained many young dancers while promoting dance as a career.
2. Adedayo Liadi – Adedayo Liadi is a Nigerian dancer, choreographer, and cultural performer. He is known for promoting traditional Nigerian dance and combining African dance with modern performance styles through stage productions and dance training.
3. Don Flexx – Don Flexx is a Nigerian dancer, choreographer, and dance instructor. He is known for his energetic dance performances, choreography, and for mentoring young dancers in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
4. Poco Lee – Poco Lee is a Nigerian dancer, hypeman, and entertainer. He became popular for promoting street dance styles and Afrobeat dance moves. His performances have contributed to the popularity of Nigerian dance around the world.
5. Izzy Odigie – Izzy Odigie is a Nigerian dancer, choreographer, and dance instructor. She has performed on many stages, trained dancers, and worked with musicians and entertainment companies to promote professional dance in Nigeria.

SUMMARY
In this lesson, pupils learned that dance is the rhythmic movement of the body, usually performed to music for expression, entertainment, worship, celebration, exercise, or communication.
