PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. narrate the history of hockey in Nigeria;

2. state hockey facilities and equipment;

3. draw and label the hockey pitch with dimensions.

4. perform the basic skills in hockey.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOR

The pupils can differentiate between hockey game and other ball games.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

7. Hockey ball

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Hockey is a sport in which two teams play against each other by trying to maneuver a ball into the opponent’s side using a hockey stick.

There are different types of hockey –

1. Field hockey

2. Ice hockey

 

 

HISTORY OF HOCKEY IN NIGERIA 

Hockey game was introduced into Nigeria by European in 1928, who introduced and played the game in various schools and colleges in the country.

Hockey became regular feature in inter-house sport competitions of Kings’ College, Igbobi College and St. Gregory’s College, and with some army unit teams, friendly matches were being conducted.

The Nigeria Hockey Federation (NHF) is the governing body of Field Hockey in Nigeria. It is affiliated to IHF International Hockey Federation and AHF African Hockey Federation. The headquarter of NHF is in Abuja, Nigeria.

 

 

LESSON 2 – FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

1. Hockey stick  and ball

2. Protector (helmet/facemask with mouth guard, neck guard, shoulder/elbow/shin pads, gloves, paint)

3. Shoes (field and ice)

4. Hhistle

5. Hockey pitch

 

 

BASIC SKILLS IN HOCKEY

1. Gripping

2. First touch

3. Hitting

4. Passing

5. Dribbling

6. Flat stick tackle

7. Defending

8. Positioning

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Displays chart showing ball games.

3. Asks pupils to examine and describe each of the game on the chart.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify the unique difference between each ball game and describe.

4. Uses the chart and pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson.

5. Explains the meaning and types of hockey.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand and explain the meaning and types of hockey.

6. Narrates the history of hockey in Nigeria.

Pupil’s Activities – Listen to the history of hockey in Nigeria.

7. Uses the chart to mention the facilities and equipments used for playing hockey.

Pupil’s Activities – Use the chart to identify and state the facilities and equipments used for playing hockey.

8. Draws and labels hockey pitch and indicate the appropriate dimensions.

Pupil’s Activities – Draw and labels hockey pitch and indicate the appropriate dimensions.

9. Leads a discussion on the basic skills in hockey.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate in the class discussion.

10. Demonstrates each skill in hockey.

Pupil’s Activities – Practice and demonstrate each skill in hockey.

11. Supervises the game as the pupils practice and demonstrate.

12. Summarizes the major points on the board.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the lesson summary and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson  – table tennis.

Asks pupils to:

1. narrate the history of hockey in Nigeria;

2. state 5 hockey facilities and equipment;

3. draw and label the hockey pitch with dimensions.

4. perform 5 basic skills in hockey.
