CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Football is one of the most popular games in Nigeria and around the world. It is played by children and adults for recreation and competition. The game requires teamwork, skill, discipline, and regular practice.
In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of football, the brief history of football in Nigeria, the facilities and equipment used, the advantages of playing football, and the safety measures to observe while playing the game.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF FOOTBALL
Football is a team game played by two teams of eleven players each on a rectangular field. The aim of the game is to score goals by kicking the ball into the opponent’s goal while preventing the opposing team from scoring.
BRIEF HISTORY OF FOOTBALL IN NIGERIA
Football was introduced into Nigeria in the early 1900s by British colonial administrators, missionaries, traders, and sailors. The game quickly became popular in schools, communities, and workplaces across the country.
To organise and develop football, the Nigeria Football Federation (formerly the Nigeria Football Association) was established in 1945. Since then, the federation has organised national competitions, developed football talents, and represented Nigeria in international competitions.
Today, football is the most popular sport in Nigeria and is played in schools, communities, clubs, and national competitions.
LESSON 2 – FACILITIES USED IN FOOTBALL
Facilities are the places or structures where football is played.
1. Football Field (Pitch) – A football field (pitch) is the large rectangular playing area where football matches are played.
2. Goal Posts – Goal posts are the two upright posts joined by a crossbar at each end of the football field. Players score goals by kicking the ball into the goal.
3. Spectator Stands – Spectator stands are seating areas where supporters, parents, and other spectators sit to watch football matches.
4. Players’ Benches – Players’ benches are seats provided beside the football field where substitute players, coaches, and team officials sit during the match.
5. Scoreboard – A scoreboard is a board or electronic display used to show the score, match time, and other important information during a football game.
6. Changing Rooms – Changing rooms are special rooms where players change into their football kits before the match and change back into their regular clothes after the match.
7. Floodlights (for Night Matches) – Floodlights are powerful electric lights installed around the football field to provide adequate lighting for matches played in the evening or at night.
EQUIPMENT USED IN FOOTBALL
Equipment are the items needed to play football.
1. Football – A football is a round ball specially designed for playing the game of football.
2. Football Boots – Football boots are specially designed shoes with studs underneath to provide good grip and balance on the football field.
3. Shin Guards – Shin guards are protective pads worn inside the socks to protect the lower legs from injuries during play.
4. Sports Jersey – A sports jersey is the shirt worn by football players to identify their team during a match.
5. Shorts – Shorts are comfortable sports trousers worn by football players to allow free movement while playing.
6. Socks – Socks are long sports stockings worn to cover the legs and hold the shin guards firmly in place.
7. Whistle – A whistle is a small instrument used by the referee to start, stop, and control the football match.

SUMMARY
