CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Basketball is one of the most popular games played in schools and sports competitions. It is a team sport where players dribble, pass, and shoot a ball into the opponent’s basket to score points.
In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of basketball, the brief history of basketball in Nigeria, the facilities and equipment used, the advantages of playing basketball, and the safety measures to observe while playing the game.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF BASKETBALL
Basketball is a team game played by two teams of five players each on a rectangular court. The aim of the game is to score points by throwing the ball through the opponent’s basket while preventing the opposing team from scoring.
BRIEF HISTORY OF BASKETBALL IN NIGERIA
Basketball was introduced into Nigeria in the 1950s through schools, missionaries, and sports organisations. The game became popular among young people and was gradually introduced into secondary schools, colleges, universities, and sports clubs across the country.
To organise and promote basketball, the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) was established in 1964. Since then, the federation has organised national competitions, trained players and officials, and represented Nigeria in international basketball competitions.
Today, basketball is widely played in schools, higher institutions, sports clubs, and national and international competitions.
LESSON 2 – EQUIPMENT USED IN BASKETBALL
Facilities are the places or structures where basketball is played.
1. Basketball Court – A basketball court is the rectangular playing area where basketball games are played.
2. Basketball Hoops (Goals) – Basketball hoops (goals) are circular metal rings with nets attached, fixed at both ends of the court, through which players shoot the ball to score points.
3. Backboards – Backboards are flat rectangular boards fixed behind each basketball hoop. They support the hoop and help players make accurate shots.
4. Spectator Stands – Spectator stands are seating areas where parents, supporters, and other spectators sit to watch basketball games.
5. Players’ Benches – Players’ benches are seats provided beside the basketball court where substitute players, coaches, and team officials sit during the game.
6. Scoreboard – A scoreboard is a board or electronic display used to show the scores, game time, fouls, and other important information during a basketball match.
7. Changing Rooms – Changing rooms are special rooms where players change into their sports clothing before the game and change back into their regular clothes after the game.

Equipment are the items needed to play basketball.

2. Backboard – A backboard is a flat rectangular board fixed behind the basketball hoop. It supports the hoop and helps players make accurate shots.

SUMMARY
