BRIEF HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL IN NIGERIA
Volleyball was introduced into Nigeria during the colonial period by missionaries, teachers, and members of the armed forces. Although the exact date of its introduction is uncertain, the game was already being played in mission schools, colleges, and military formations before organised competitive volleyball began in the 1960s.
On May 27, 1971, Nigeria played its first international volleyball match against Togo during the African Zonal Qualifying Tournament for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. To further develop the sport, the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) was established in 1972 to organise competitions, train players and officials, and represent Nigeria in international volleyball events.
