To organise and promote hockey, the Nigeria Hockey Federation was established in 1972. Since then, the federation has organised national competitions, trained players and officials, and represented Nigeria in international hockey tournaments.

Today, hockey is played in schools, universities, sports clubs, and national competitions in Nigeria.

SUMMARY

In this lesson, pupils learned that hockey is a team game played with hockey sticks and a ball. The aim of the game is to use the stick to control, pass, and hit the ball into the opponent’s goal to score points.

They also learned that hockey was introduced into Nigeria in the early 1900s by British colonial administrators and missionaries. The Nigeria Hockey Federation was established in 1972 to organise and promote hockey in Nigeria.

Pupils identified the basic skills in hockey, including gripping the hockey stick, dribbling, passing, receiving or trapping the ball, hitting, pushing, tackling, and shooting at goal.

They also identified the facilities used in hockey, such as the hockey field (pitch), goal posts, spectator stands, players’ benches, scoreboard, changing rooms, and floodlights.

Furthermore, pupils learned the equipment used in hockey, including the hockey stick, hockey ball, goal posts, sports jersey, shorts or sports skirt, sports shoes, shin guards, mouth guard, goalkeeper’s protective equipment, and whistle.

Finally, pupils learned the advantages of playing hockey, such as improving physical fitness, teamwork, coordination, agility, discipline, endurance, and sportsmanship. They also learned the safety measures to observe while playing hockey, including warming up before playing, wearing protective equipment, using standard equipment, following the rules of the game, avoiding dangerous play, and reporting injuries immediately.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

Step 1: Introduction – The teacher displays a hockey stick, a hockey ball, or pictures/videos of a hockey match and asks pupils if they have ever seen or played hockey.

Step 2: Meaning of Hockey – The teacher explains the meaning of hockey, the objective of the game, and the number of players in a team.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils explain the meaning of hockey in their own words.

Step 3: Brief History of Hockey in Nigeria – The teacher explains that hockey was introduced into Nigeria in the early 1900s and that the Nigeria Hockey Federation was established in 1972 to organise and develop the game.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils state when hockey was introduced into Nigeria and the year the Nigeria Hockey Federation was established.

Step 4: Basic Skills in Hockey – The teacher demonstrates and explains the basic skills of hockey, including gripping the hockey stick, dribbling, passing, receiving or trapping the ball, hitting, pushing, tackling, and shooting at goal.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils observe and practise the basic skills under the teacher’s supervision.

Step 5: Facilities and Equipment – The teacher displays or points to the facilities and equipment used in hockey and explains the function of each one.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils identify the facilities and equipment and explain their uses.

Step 6: Advantages and Safety Measures – The teacher discusses the benefits of playing hockey and explains the safety rules to observe before, during, and after the game.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils mention the advantages of hockey and list the safety measures.

Step 7: Group Activity – The teacher divides the class into four groups and assigns the following tasks:

  • Group 1: List the basic skills in hockey.
  • Group 2: List the facilities used in hockey.
  • Group 3: List the equipment used in hockey.
  • Group 4: State the advantages and safety measures of playing hockey.

Each group presents its findings to the class.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils discuss in groups, write their answers, and present them to the class.

Step 8: Lesson Summary – The teacher reviews the meaning, brief history, basic skills, facilities, equipment, advantages, and safety measures of playing hockey.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils answer oral questions and summarise the lesson.

Step 9: Evaluation – The teacher asks oral and written questions and observes pupils demonstrating simple hockey skills such as gripping the stick, dribbling, passing, and receiving the ball correctly.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils answer the evaluation questions and participate actively in the practical demonstration.
