This lesson builds on that knowledge by introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI), a technology that enables computers and machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever used Google Assistant, Siri, ChatGPT, or seen a robot answering questions? These technologies can think, learn, recognise voices, and solve problems. They use a special technology called Artificial Intelligence (AI).

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of Artificial Intelligence, its types, importance, and the different areas where it is used in everyday life.

WEEK 2 – LESSON 1 – 3

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the ability of a computer or machine to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as learning, thinking, solving problems, recognising speech, and making decisions.

AI enables machines to behave in a smart or intelligent way.

TYPES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

The basic types of Artificial Intelligence include:

1. Narrow Artificial Intelligence (Weak AI) – This type of AI is designed to perform one specific task.

Examples:

• Voice assistants (Siri, Google Assistant)

• Face recognition

• Chatbots

2. General Artificial Intelligence (Strong AI) – This type of AI is designed to perform many different tasks like a human being.

Example: Human-like intelligent robots (still under development).

3. Super Artificial Intelligence –

This refers to AI that is expected to become more intelligent than humans in the future.

Example: Advanced intelligent systems (currently theoretical).

LESSON 2 – EXAMPLES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

1. Siri – Apple’s virtual assistant that answers questions and performs tasks using voice commands.

2. Google Assistant – An AI assistant that helps users search the Internet, set reminders, and control smart devices.

3. ChatGPT – An AI chatbot that answers questions, explains concepts, writes content, and assists with learning.

4. Alexa – Amazon’s virtual assistant that responds to voice commands, plays music, and controls smart home devices.

5. Face Unlock on Smartphones – AI technology that recognises a user’s face to unlock a mobile phone securely.

6. Google Translate – Uses AI to translate words, sentences, and documents from one language to another.

7. YouTube Recommendations – AI suggests videos based on a user’s viewing history and interests.

8. Netflix Recommendations – AI recommends movies and TV shows based on what a user has watched.

9. Self-Driving Cars – AI helps vehicles recognise roads, traffic signs, pedestrians, and other vehicles to drive safely.

10. Smart Robots – AI-powered robots can perform tasks such as cleaning, assisting in hospitals, manufacturing products, and helping people.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used in many areas of daily life to make work easier, faster, and more accurate. Some important areas where AI is applicable include:

1. Education – AI helps pupils and teachers through online learning platforms, smart classrooms, educational games, and virtual tutors.

2. Healthcare – AI helps doctors and nurses diagnose diseases, monitor patients, and improve medical treatments.

3. Banking and Finance – AI is used to detect fraud, operate ATMs, provide customer support through chatbots, and manage online banking services.

4. Agriculture – AI helps farmers monitor crops, detect plant diseases, predict weather conditions, and improve farming methods.

5. Transportation – AI is used in navigation systems, traffic control, self-driving vehicles, and route planning.

6. Security – AI supports facial recognition, fingerprint identification, surveillance cameras, and cyber security systems.

7. Communication – AI is used in voice assistants, language translation, email filtering, chatbots, and messaging applications.

The teacher demonstrates simple Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and guides pupils to observe how they work.

Activity 1: Voice Assistant

1. Open a smartphone or tablet with a voice assistant (e.g., Google Assistant or Siri).

2. Ask simple questions such as:

• What is the weather today?

• What time is it?

3. Explain that the assistant uses AI to understand and answer questions.

Activity 2: AI Translation

1. Open an AI translation application (e.g., Google Translate).

2. Type a simple English sentence.

SUMMARY

In this lesson, pupils learned that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the ability of computers and machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, solving problems, and making decisions.
