WEEK 3 – PRIMARY, SECONDARY AND TERTIARY PACKAGING
TYPES OF PACKAGING
Packaging can be grouped into three main types:
1. Primary packaging
2. Secondary packaging
2. Tertiary packaging
1. PRIMARY PACKAGING
Primary packaging is the first layer of packaging that is in direct contact with the product.
EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY PACKAGING
1. Sachet for pure water
2. Bottle for soft drinks or oil
3. Can for milk or sardines
4. Nylon for bread
5. Wrapper for sweets
HOW PRIMARY PACKAGING IS PRODUCED
1. Food is cleaned or processed
2. The product is put directly into bottles, cans, or nylons

2. SECONDARY PACKAGING
Secondary packaging is used to group two or more primary packages together for easy handling and display.
EXAMPLES OF SECONDARY PACKAGING

3. Wrapper holding many sweets
4. Paper box for packs of biscuits
HOW SECONDARY PACKAGING IS PRODUCED
1. Primary packaged items are gathered together

3. TERTIARY PACKAGING
Tertiary packaging is used for transporting large quantities of goods from one place to another.

HOW TERTIARY PACKAGING IS PRODUCED
Many secondary packages are grouped together
