CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Intonation is the rise and fall of the voice when speaking. Stress is the emphasis placed on certain words or syllables in a sentence. Proper intonation and stress help listeners understand the speaker’s feelings and meaning clearly.
MEANING OF INTONATION
Intonation is the change in the pitch of the voice during speech.
Meaning of Stress
Stress is the extra force or emphasis placed on a word or part of a word when speaking.
IMPORTANCE OF INTONATION AND STRESS
1. It helps communication to be clear.
2. It shows emotions and feelings.
3. It makes speech more interesting.
4. It helps listeners understand meaning correctly.
INTONATION PATTERNS
1. Rising Intonation – It is used mostly in questions.
Example:
Are you honest?
Did you complete your assignment?
2. Falling Intonation gIt is used in statements and commands.
Example:
1. Honesty is important.
2. Respect your teachers.
EXAMPLES OF STRESS IN SENTENCES
1. HONesty is the best policy.
2. We must REspect our elders.
3. GOOD citizens obey the law.
4. Hard WORK leads to success.
NATIONAL VALUES
National values are good attitudes and behaviours expected from citizens. Examples include: Honesty, Respect, Discipline, Hard work, Patriotism
DIALOGUE ON HONESTY
Dialogue 1
Teacher: Who took the missing pencil?
John: I took it, ma. I am sorry.
Teacher: Thank you for being honest.
John: I will not do it again.
Practice:
- Stress the word honest.
- Use a calm falling intonation at the end of statements.

DIALOGUE ON PATRIOTISM
Teacher: What does patriotism mean?
John: Patriotism means loving and serving one’s country.
Teacher: Correct. Good citizens protect their country and obey the law.
John: I am proud to be a Nigerian.
CLASS ACTIVITIES
- Pupils practise reading dialogues aloud.
- Pupils identify stressed words in sentences.
- Pupils role-play conversations using correct intonation.
- Pupils discuss national values in groups.
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions on speech, pronunciation, and national values.
Pupils’ Activities: The pupils respond to the teacher’s questions and give examples of national values.
2. The teacher organizes the pupils into groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.
Pupils’ Activities: Each pupil belongs to a group.
3. The teacher presents short dialogues and conversations on honesty, respect, discipline, hard work, and patriotism for the pupils to read aloud.
Pupils’ Activities: The pupils read the dialogues aloud and identify stressed words and intonation patterns.
4. The teacher uses the dialogues and the pupils’ responses to introduce the lesson and explain the meaning of intonation and stress.
Pupils’ Activities: The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction, understand, and explain the meaning of intonation and stress in their own words.
5. The teacher guides the pupils on how to use rising and falling intonation correctly in questions and statements.
