1. identify some of the Lagos State Emergency Services Numbers and their call numbers.

2. state the functions of major emergency agencies.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

MEANING OF EMERGENCY 

An emergency is an unexpected situation that require urgent attention and action to avoid more harmful and dangerous hazardous. These situations are threat to lives and properties that require urgent and immediately attention.

Almost all the agencies (government and privates) response to most emergency situations especially the ones that concerns them the most. Each agency performs other duties to support other emergency agencies where it’s needed. Mostly, Nigeria Police Force must be present at all emergency situations.

NIGERIA POLICE FORCE 

The primary areas of police responsibility at any emergency situations are to save life, coordinate the emergency phase and call the essential service.

FEDERAL ROAD TO SAFETY CORPS (FRSC) AND LASTMA 

In any emergency situations, FRSC and LASTMA regulate use of sirens, flashers and beacon lights on vehicles and mobile clinics for the treatment of accident victims free of charge.

Regulating the use of sirens, flashers and beacon lights on vehicles are not applicable to the vehicles belong to the following Armed Forces, Nigeria Police, Fire Service and other Paramilitary Agencies by providing the mobile clinics for the treatment of accident victims free of charge.

LAGOS STATE AND FEDERAL AMBULANCE SERVICE 

The federal and states ambulance service provide pre-hospital care for patients experiencing medical emergencies in disasters and medical transport to tertiary health care facilities by road, air and water.

They also be involved in ensuring that people at risk are moved out of harm’s way, particularly those with health concerns.

STATES/FEDERAL FIRE SERVICE 

Fire service at states and federal level extinguish fire, protect life and prosperity, rescue and protect people in the event of fire accident or incident and other emergencies.

CITIZENS’ MEDIATION CENTRE (CMC)

Lagos State Citizens Mediation Centre provides an alternative dispute resolution mechanism which residents of Lagos state can use to resolve their cases instead of litigation.

The main objective is to provide free and less cumbersome means of obtaining justice for all residents thereby discouraging self-help and impunity.

NATIONAL DRUG LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY (NDLEA)

In the case of illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, NDLEA prevents the supply of illicit drugs and bringing suppliers to book, reducing the demand for illicit drugs and other substances of abuse and tracing and recovering drug-related proceeds, through effective drug law enforcement.

RAPID RESPONSE SQUAD (RRS)

Rapid Response Squad (RRS) is a section of the Lagos State Police Command setup to respond speedily to emergencies within Lagos State. The Squad was charged with onerous task of flushing crime out of every part of Lagos State.

KICK AGAINST INDISCIPLINE 

Kick Against indiscipline (KAI) prevents the erection of illegal structures on walkway, drains, pathways, road verges, medians and pedestrian bridges in the state. Also, it prevents the selling and cooking of food on roads or walkways as well as preventing auto mechanics from operating on roadsides.

The Office of Public Defenders provides the following service such as Domestic violence, Sexual Abuse, Child abuse, Landlord/tenant, Employer/employee, Breach of contract, Rape/defilement, Matrimonial causes/Divorce, Compensation/Monetary, Unlawful detention, and other services.

STATE ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH MONITORING UNIT 

State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit is also known as open corpse removal. SEHMU is a Lagos State agency that is responsible for prompt removal of corpses/dead bodies from high ways, Street, Disaster/Accident Sports, Designated Hospitals with the state to protect public health this preventing epidemics, keep the city of Lagos free of dead bodies, provide pest control services such as disinfection and general sanitation measure at pick up site, disaster sport, offices and residents.

LAGOS STATE NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY CORPS (LNSC)

The Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC) is a uniformed security agency established to assist the Police and other security agencies to maintain law and order by gathering information about crimes, crime in progress, suspicious activities and crime suspects among other things in the state.

They operate in all the 57 LGA/LCDA in Lagos to ensure that hoodlums and cult groups do not have the opportunity to operate, patrol day and night, timely reporting of suspicious activities and crimes in progress to the police or other security agencies and improving relationship between the police and the community as it concerns law enforcement.

 

LAGOS STATE SAFETY COMMISSION

The Lagos State Safety Commission is responsible for the coordination of all Government matters relating to the safety of lives and property of Lagosians. The commission is vested with powers to formulate policies, provide advisory and be the regulatory body on safety related issues.

DISTRESS CALL 

A distress call is a call to notify the appropriate agency requesting for emergency service(s) for a person, vehicle or vessel that need immediate assistance.

A distress call is also known as distress call. It is a signal that indicates that a person or group of people, etc. is threatened by a serious danger and requires immediate response.

REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT – As stated in performance objectives or lesson evaluation. 

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes the pupils in groups or pair depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher asks the groups to state 5 government agencies in Lagos State as stated in the previous lessons.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils mention 5 government agencies in Lagos State.

4. Teacher uses the class discussion and relevant responses to introduce the lesson – Lagos State Emergency Service and their functions.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the lesson Introduction to understand the concept of the lesson.

5. Teacher discuss the inter functions and duties of government agencies during emergency situations.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils analyze the importance of inter functions and duties of government agencies during emergency situations.

6. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board with appropriate evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to most of the questions write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
