THEME: LEARNING ABOUT OUR ENVIRONMENT
PREVIOUS LESSON – TYPES OF SOIL (PRIMARY 1) and Soil – Meaning (Types) and Properties of Soil (Primary 2 and Primary 3)
TOPIC – IMPORTANCE OF SOIL
By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:
1. list the importance of soil to plant and animals.
2. state the uses of soil.
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:
Chart showing land preparation for agriculture.
Chart on production from soil e.g. clay pot, mud house, and food item/crops.
METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
LESSON ONE – INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES
Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities – Takes the pupils to the nearest construction site, block factory, farmland, where clay are used for making pot, etc. for the pupils to identify different uses of soil.
LESSON TWO – IMPORTANCE OF SOIL
Guide the pupils to state the importance of soil in their words.
Soil is used for the following –
1. For building houses.
2. For making blocks.
3. For construction of roads.
4. For making pot.
5. For planting crops.
6. For playing.
7. For bridges.
Find out the types of soil used for modern and traditional houses.
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Grow potted plants three weeks before the lesson.
Pupil’s Activities – Look closely at a potted plant. Pull out the potted plant form the soil and describe how easy the task of pulling is. Describe the roleplayed by the soil to the growth of the plant.
3. Takes pupils on afield trip. Identifies construction site and potters workshop for class visits.
Pupil’s Activities – Visit construction sites and potters workshop. Make models of familiar objects.
4. Guides pupils in making careful observation of the potted plant so as to be able to describe the importance of soil to plants and man.
Pupil’s Activities – Describe the different things soil can be used for.
- To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
Pupils to state at least three importance of soil.
