CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Many children have attended or seen a wedding ceremony where a man and a woman are joined together as husband and wife. During these ceremonies, families, friends, and well-wishers gather to celebrate. In Nigeria, different cultures and religions celebrate marriage in different ways.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of marriage, the types of marriage (monogamy and polygamy), and some marriage festivals celebrated in Nigeria.

MEANING OF MARRIAGE

Marriage is the coming together of a man and a woman as husband and wife according to the customs, traditions, or laws of their society.

Marriage helps to establish a family.

TYPES OF MARRIAGE

1. Monogamy

Monogamy is a type of marriage in which one man is married to one woman.

Example: Mr. Alabi is married to only Mrs. Alabi.

2. Polygamy

Polygamy is a type of marriage in which one man is married to more than one wife.

Example: A man who has two or more wives.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MONOGAMY AND POLYGAMY

1. Monogamy involves one man marrying one woman, while polygamy involves one man marrying two or more wives.

2. Monogamy has only one wife, while polygamy has two or more wives.

3. Monogamy is a single marriage, while polygamy involves multiple wives.

MARRIAGE FESTIVALS IN NIGERIA

Marriage festivals are joyful celebrations held during wedding ceremonies in different parts of Nigeria.

SUMMARY
