CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES

Teacher’s Activities – Ask the pupils to write on paper the meals taken for breakfast, lunch and dinner in the previous day.

Pupil’s response – As stated by the pupils.

Teacher’s remark – Thanks for sharing. Review the pupil’s response and separate all meals with adequate diet. These kinds of meal (mention the meals) are call balanced diet or adequate diet. Discuss the meaning of balanced diet and major meals of the day.

MEANING OF ADEQUATE OR BALANCED DIET 

Balanced diets are the different types of food that provide adequate amounts of the nutrients necessary for good health.

 

 

Balanced diet is also known as adequate or healthy diet.

 

COMPONENTS OF BALANCED DIET

A balanced diet consists of six (6) main nutrient groups:

1. Carbohydrates

2. Proteins

3. Vitamins

4. Minerals

5. Fats and oils

6. Water

LESSON 2 – THREE MAJOR MEALS OF THE DAY 

The minimum meals in a day are as follows:

1. Breakfast

2. Lunch

3. Dinner

 

PLANNING ADEQUATE BALANCED MEALS

1. Breakfast – Morning meals 

  • Ogi (Pap) or golden morn with moi moi
  • Bread and eggs
  • Bread with butter and tea
  • Boiled plantains and stew
  • Nigerian salad
  • Rice and beans
  • Fried plantains and Beans, and so on.

 

2. Lunch – Afternoon meals 

  • Amala with fish stew and ewedu
  • Fufu with efo riro (vegetable stew)

 

 

  • Jollof rice and dodo (fried plantain) with meat or chicken stew
  • Iyan (pounded yam) with egusi stew
  • White rice with moi moi and stewed fish or fried meat or chicken stew
  • Semolina or amala with ogbonno or bitter leaf stew.

 

3. Dinner – Night meals 

  • Rice with efo riro (vegetable stew)
  • Fried rice with coleslaw, fried chicken
  • Eko with meat or chicken stew
  • Boiled plantains with meat or chicken stew or vegetable stew
  • Tuwo (ground rice) with meat stew.

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Explains the constituents of an balanced diet.

Pupil’s Activities – Collect samples of food materials that make up the component of an balanced diet.

3. Guides pupils to define an balanced diet.

4. Guides pupils planning daily meals.

Pupil’s Activities – Make a meal plan of balanced diet for a day.

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
