PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

1. describe the features of traditional marriage.

2. State values of traditional marriage.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of pictures showing traditional marriage and bride’s prizes.

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

MEANING OF MARRIAGE 

Marriage is the union between a man and a woman to be husband and wife. Marriage is lawful and legal.

 

TYPES OF MARRIAGE

 

There are two types of marriages. These are –

1. Traditional marriage

2. Modern marriage

 

MEANING OF TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE 

Traditional marriage is the marriage conducted in accordance to custom and traditions of the people.

Traditional marriage is the oldest form of marriage in Nigeria before modern marriage was introduced.

Traditional marriage is still the basis for modern marriage.

 

FEATURES OF TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE 

Marriage takes between the parents of the man and the woman. The following are some of the features of traditional ceremony depending on the culture –

1. Introduction ceremony with different kinds of fruit, kolanuts, etc. from groom’s family.

2. Payment of a bride price.

3. Traditional ceremony and prayer.

4. Traditional marriage allows more than one wife.

 

VALUES OF TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE 

The values of traditional marriage are –

 

1. It protect of the family’s good names.

2. Respect for each other families and in laws.

3. It creates a new bond between couple and their families.

4. A new friendship is formed between the two families.

5. There is truthfulness between husband and wife.

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

 

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Asks pupils to explain the meaning of marriage.

Pupil’s Activities – Explain the meaning of marriage.

4. Explain features of traditional marriage.

Pupil’s Activities – State features traditional marriage.

5. Discuss the values of traditional marriage.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the class discussion.

6. Summary the lesson on the board.

Pupil’s Activities – Copy as the teacher writes.

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
