1. explain what a tuber crop is.

2. give examples of tuber crops.

3. classify tuber crops.

The pupils can identify some of the tuber crops.

2. Samples of root tuber crops.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES 

Teacher’s Activities – Ask the pupils to state common tuber crops in their community.

Pupil’s Activities – Yam, potato, cocoyam, etc.

Teacher’s remarks – A great cheer for quick response. Note the examples of tuber crops mentioned by the pupils on the board and discuss the meaning of tuber crops.

MEANING OF TUBER CROPS 

Tuber crops as those that store their food in their stems or roots.

 

EXAMPLES OF LOCAL TUBER CROPS

Teacher’s remarks – A great cheer for quick response. The crops can be classified into stem and root tuber crops. Discuss the classification of tuber crops.

CLASSIFICATION OF TUBER CROPS 

1. STEM TUBER CROPS 

Stem tubers are crops that produce tuber not as root.

For example,

• Yam

• Cocoyam

• Irish potatoes

2. ROOT TUBER CROPS 

Root tubers are crops that produce tuber as root.

For example,

• Cassava

• Sweet potatoes

• Carrots

• Onions

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Display and show local stem tubers and root tubers.

Pupil’s Activities – Observe and identify the stem and root tuber crops.

3. Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities – Draw diagrams of stem and root tuber crops.

4. Summarizes the lesson on the board.

Pupil’s Activities – Copy as the teacher writes.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
