ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Pupils have previously learned about Social Media: Meaning, Types, Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Media. They understand that social media and the internet are used for communication, learning, entertainment, and sharing information.

This lesson builds on that knowledge by introducing pupils to the concept of computer misuse, the different areas where computers are misused, the reasons why people abuse computers, and the ways to prevent computer abuse.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Computers and the internet have made communication, learning, business, and entertainment easier and faster. However, some people use computers for illegal or harmful activities such as hacking, spreading computer viruses, cyberbullying, online fraud, and stealing personal information.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of computer misuse, the areas where computers are misused, the reasons why people abuse computers, and the ways to prevent computer abuse. They will also learn the importance of using computers and the internet safely, responsibly, and ethically.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF COMPUTER MISUSE

Computer misuse is the improper, illegal, or unethical use of a computer, computer system, or the internet to cause harm, steal information, damage property, or perform unlawful activities.

Computer misuse can affect individuals, organisations, and society.

AREAS OF COMPUTER MISUSE

Computers may be misused in the following ways:

1. Hacking into computer systems.

2. Spreading computer viruses and malware.

3. Cyberbullying and online harassment.

4. Internet fraud and online scams.

5. Identity theft.

6. Piracy (illegal copying of software, music, movies, or books).

7. Plagiarism (copying another person’s work without permission).

8. Sending spam messages.

9. Accessing confidential information without permission.

10. Creating or sharing false information (fake news).

LESSON 2 – REASONS FOR COMPUTER ABUSE

People misuse computers for different reasons, including:

1. Greed or the desire for money.

SUMMARY

Finally, pupils learned the ways to prevent computer abuse, including using strong passwords, installing antivirus software, protecting personal information, avoiding suspicious links and emails, respecting computer ethics and laws, using licensed software, reporting cybercrime, updating computer software regularly, and using computers and the internet safely and responsibly.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

Step 1: Introduction – The teacher asks pupils if they have ever heard of people using computers or the internet to steal information, bully others, or commit fraud. The teacher explains that such activities are examples of computer misuse.
