PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained either following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. discuss a previous event observed in the school.

2. discuss a story had from parent.

3. listen to the teacher while teaching them the meaning of keeping records with music.

4. listening to CDs telling stories of important past events e.g. Nigeria independent.

5. discuss how music is used for recording past events.

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can say the lyrics of some songs.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Radio set with cassette or flash containing songs

2. Mobile phone for playing music

3. Television with dvd

4. Musical instruments

5. Chart Showing songs

 

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Music is a sound that good and lovely to hear and dance to. The sound is produced by human voices or instruments. Music is used for many for purposes such as entertainment, uniting people together, relaxation, religious rituals, communication, celebrating one another, etc.

Music is also used for recording past events.

 

PAST EVENT

Past event is something that happens in the past. It is also referred as our previous experience or memories. For examples, something that happens in at home, in the school, in Nigeria, etc.

 

PAST EVENTS IN THE SCHOOL

The following are past events in the school –

1. Inter house sport

2. End of year part

3. Promotion exam

4. Christmas carol

5. Quiz, debate or competition, etc.

 

PAST EVENTS AT HOME

1. Birthday party

2. Wedding ceremony or anniversary

3. Naming ceremony

4. Christmas, Easter or Sallah

5. Burial ceremony, etc.

 

PAST EVENTS IN NIGERIA

The following are past events in Nigeria –

1. Independence day

2. First military coup

3. Protests against police violence (EndSar)

4. 200 Chiko girls kidnapped

5. Boko Haram crisis

6. Introduction of Sharia law in the North

7. Biafra war, etc.

 

LESSON 2 – MUSIC AS A TOOL FOR RECORDING PAST EVENT

There are various ways of keeping records in the past. Some past events are translated in writing or riddles while others are in music.

Music is one the tools used in recording past events. Recording past events mean keep facts about something or someone. Such facts are used as follows –

1. Communication

2. Knowledge

3. Culture

4. Norms

5. Medicine

6. Religion ritual

7. Freedom

8. Warming

9. Peace and unity, etc.

 

PLAYING MUSIC RECORDED WITH PAST EVENTS

Teacher plays music such as –

1. National anthem (independent)

2. Iwe kiko and bata re adun koko ka (advice)

3. Education is my pride (knowledge)

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes the pupils into groups depending on the size of the lesson.

3. Teacher uses mp3 player to play some music with past events.

4. Teacher guides the pupils to identify and analyze the lyrics of the songs.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils listen to music and explain its lyrics.

5. Teacher uses the pupils relevant responses to introduce the lesson and leads a class discussion on music and past events at home, in the school and in Nigeria.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction and participate actively in the class discussion.

6. Teacher explains music as a tool for recording past events using appropriate songs.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils understand the importance of the music as tool for recording past events.

7. Teacher leads a class discussion on the lyrics of National anthem.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils analyze the importance of national anthem.

8. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board using appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to most of the questions and write as instructed.

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
