Pupils have previously learned about the types of religion, religious practices, similarities among religions, and ways of worship in Nigeria.

This lesson builds on that knowledge by teaching pupils how to respect other people’s beliefs, traditions, and methods of worship.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Pupils have seen people from different religions pray in different ways and celebrate different religious festivals. They may also have friends or neighbours who belong to different religions and traditions. Even though people have different beliefs and methods of worship, everyone should be respected.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about other people’s beliefs and traditions, how to respect different religious beliefs, and the different methods of worship in Nigeria.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF BELIEFS

Beliefs are the ideas or things that people accept as true, especially about God, religion, and life.

RESPECTING OTHER PEOPLE’S RELIGIOUS BELIEFS

People belong to different religions and have different beliefs. We should respect everyone’s religious beliefs even if they are different from ours.

Ways of showing respect include:

1. Being polite to everyone.

2. Allowing others to worship peacefully.

3. Avoiding insults about another person’s religion.

4. Listening respectfully to others.

5. Living peacefully with people of different religions.

6. Showing kindness to everyone.

LESSON 2 – MEANING OF TRADITIONS

Traditions are customs, practices, and ways of life that are passed from one generation to another.

RESPECTING OTHER PEOPLE’S TRADITIONS

We should also respect the traditions of other people by:

1. Appreciating their culture.

2. Avoiding discrimination.

3. Joining peaceful cultural celebrations when invited.

4. Respecting traditional leaders and elders.

SUMMARY

In this lesson, pupils learned that beliefs are the ideas people accept as true, while traditions are customs and practices passed from one generation to another. They learned that people have different religious beliefs, traditions, and methods of worship, and that everyone deserves respect.
