CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Pupils have seen people go to churches, mosques, and traditional places of worship. They have also seen people pray, sing religious songs, read holy books, and celebrate religious festivals. These activities are part of religion and help people worship God and live good lives.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of religion, the types of religion practised in Nigeria, and the materials used for worship in different religions.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF RELIGION

Religion is the belief in and worship of God or a supreme being. It teaches people how to live good lives, love others, and obey God’s commandments.

TYPES OF RELIGION IN NIGERIA

The three main types of religion practised in Nigeria are:

1. Christianity

Christianity is the religion of people who believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Saviour.

Christians worship in a church.

2. Islam

Islam is the religion of people who believe in Allah and follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

Muslims worship in a mosque.

3. African Traditional Religion (ATR)

African Traditional Religion is the indigenous religion practised by some African communities before Christianity and Islam became widespread.

Followers worship according to their traditional beliefs and customs.

LESSON 2 – RELIGIOUS PRACTICES

Religious practices are the activities people perform to worship God or show their faith.

Examples include:

1. Praying

2. Singing hymns or religious songs

3. Reading holy books

4. Attending places of worship

5. Fasting

6. Giving offerings or charity

SUMMARY

In this lesson, pupils learned that religion is the belief in and worship of God or a supreme being. They learned that the three main religions practised in Nigeria are Christianity, Islam, and African Traditional Religion.

Pupils also learned about the places of worship for each religion: church for Christians, mosque for Muslims, and traditional places of worship for followers of African Traditional Religion.
