Lesson One – Meaning and Symbols of Weather

TIME – 40 Minutes each.
LEARNING OUTCOME
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
1. identify and write simple weather symbols;
2. observe weather changes over a period of about three weeks;
3. use the weather symbols to keep records of weather changes;
4. prepare a weather chart.
RATIONALE
Weather is the state of the atmosphere at a particular time. The following are weather symbols sunny, cloudy, cloudy with sunshine, sunny with rainfall, cloudy with thunder, etc. representing the the sun, the rainfall, the cloud, the wind, etc.
Weather symbols are used internationally to communicate the weather forecast to people. The value of using a symbol is that it contains no words and can therefore be easy to understand.
The concept of weather, symbols and charts will enable the pupils to understand and records weather of the day using appropriate symbols.
LEARNING MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:
Weather symbols
Weather chart
Cardboard
Writing materials
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE
The pupils can tell when it cloudy and about to rain. They are aware of different things that comes along with the rain – storm thunder, wind, dust, etc. After rainy season comes the dry season, sunny days.
