CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
When we use a computer, the information we type or process must be shown, printed, or played so that we can understand the result. The devices that help the computer present information to the user are called output devices.
In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning, types, and functions of output devices and identify the common output devices used with computers.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF OUTPUT DEVICES
Output devices are computer hardware that receive processed information from a computer and present it to the user in a form that can be seen, heard, or printed.
TYPES OF OUTPUT DEVICES AND THEIR FUNCTIONS
1. Monitor
A monitor is an output device that displays information, pictures, videos, and text on a screen.
Functions of Monitor:
- It displays text and images.
- It dhows videos and animations.
- It displays the results of computer work.
2. Printer
A printer is an output device that produces information on paper.
Functions of Printer:
- It prints documents.
- It prints pictures.
- It produces hard copies of computer work.
3. Speakers
Speakers are output devices that produce sound from the computer.
Functions of Speakers:
- They play music.
- They produce sound during videos and games.
- They help users listen to audio recordings.
4. Headphones
Headphones are output devices worn on the ears to listen to sound privately.
Functions of Headphones:
- They allow private listening.
- They play music and audio.
- They reduce disturbance to others.
5. Projector
A projector is an output device that displays computer images and videos on a large screen or wall.
Functions of Projector:
- It displays presentations.
- It shows videos to a large audience.
- It supports classroom teaching.
6. Plotter
A plotter is an output device used to produce large drawings and designs.
Functions of Plotter:
- It prints maps.
- It prints architectural drawings.
- It produces engineering designs.
LESSON 2 – GENERAL FUNCTIONS OF OUTPUT DEVICES
1. To display processed information.
2. To print documents and pictures.
3. To produce sound.
4. To display presentations.
5. To show videos and animations.
6. To help users view the results of computer processing.
7. To produce hard copies of information.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INPUT AND OUTPUT DEVICES
1. Input devices are used to enter data into the computer, while output devices are used to display or produce processed information from the computer. While, Input devices send data to the computer, while output devices receive information from the computer and present it to the user.
2. Examples of Input Devices: Keyboard, Mouse, Scanner, Microphone while Examples of Output Devices: Monitor, Printer, Speakers, Headphones, Projector, Plotter

SUMMARY
In this lesson, pupils learned that output devices are computer hardware used to present processed information from the computer to the user in a form that can be seen, heard, or printed.
They identified the common output devices, including:
- Monitor – Displays text, pictures, and videos on the screen.
- Printer – Produces hard copies of documents and pictures.
- Speakers – Produce sound from the computer.
- Headphones – Allow users to listen to sound privately.
- Projector – Displays computer images and presentations on a large screen.
- Plotter – Produces large drawings, maps, and engineering designs.
Pupils also learned the functions of output devices, such as displaying processed information, printing documents, producing sound, showing videos and presentations, and providing users with the results of computer processing.
Finally, they learned the difference between input devices and output devices:
- Input devices are used to enter data into the computer.
- Output devices are used to display or produce processed information from the computer.
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
Step 1: Introduction – The teacher displays a monitor, printer, speakers, headphones, projector, or pictures of these devices and asks pupils if they have seen or used any of them before.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils identify the devices they know and mention where they have seen or used them.
Step 2: Meaning of Output Devices – The teacher explains that output devices are computer hardware that receive processed information from the computer and present it to the user.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils explain the meaning of output devices in their own words.
Step 3: Types of Output Devices – The teacher introduces the common output devices:
- Monitor
- Printer
- Speakers
- Headphones
- Projector
- Plotter
The teacher displays each device or its picture and explains its function.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils identify and name each output device correctly.
Step 4: Functions of Output Devices – The teacher explains the functions of each output device and demonstrates how they are used where possible.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils state the functions of the output devices.
Step 5: Difference Between Input and Output Devices – The teacher explains that:
- Input devices are used to enter data into the computer.
- Output devices are used to display or produce processed information.
- Examples of both input and output devices are discussed.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils differentiate between input and output devices.
Step 6: Group Activity – The teacher divides the class into four groups and assigns the following activities:
- Group 1: Identify and name different output devices displayed by the teacher.
- Group 2: Explain the functions of each output device.
- Group 3: Classify the displayed devices into input devices and output devices.
- Group 4: Demonstrate the correct use of common output devices such as the monitor, printer, speakers, or projector.
Each group presents its work before the class.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils discuss, complete the assigned activities, and present their findings.
Step 7: Lesson Summary – The teacher reviews the meaning, types, and functions of output devices and the difference between input and output devices.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils answer oral questions and summarise the lesson.
Step 8: Evaluation – The teacher asks oral and written questions to assess pupils’ understanding of output devices, their types, functions, and proper identification.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils answer the evaluation questions and participate actively in the lesson.
CONCLUSION
To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
