CONCEPTS OF NATIONALISM
Nationalism is a political ideology that emphasizes on the importance of national values, cultures and their sovereignty. The spirit of nationalism is a call to develop and promote patriotism. It is the best efforts of the people for progress, development, unity and great sacrifices in the cause of the nation.
Nationalism implies a group feeling directed towards a set of values, which are considered unique and valuable over other. The people who feel that they have their common, unique social heritage, their art and literature generally develop the feeling of nationalism.
NATIONALISM IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS
The spirit of nationalism can be manifest as follows – national team, national training program and national sports and games festival.
1. National Teams
National team is a team that represents a nation in international sports event such as World Cup, Olympic, Common Wealth Games or African Cup of Nation. The national team participates to demonstrate their national unity and uniqueness. For example, Super Eagle and Falcon of Nigeria.
2. National Training Program
National Training Program is a program aimed at enhancing national consciousness and preparedness in the youth by developing the physical attributes in international sports and games.
3. National Sports and Games Festivals
The Nigerian National Sports Festival is a multi-sport event organized by a nation to demonstrate their national unity and cultural diversity in physical activities. For example, Nigerian National Sports Festival.
PATRIOTISM
Patriotism is the love and loyalty for one’s country and the desire to make it great and better. The spirit of teamwork, sportsmanship and commitment are demonstrated for a excellence performance.
PATRIOTISM IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS
The spirit of patriotism can be manifest as follows –
1. Respect for the national symbols.
2. Respect for the national flag.
3. Respect for the national anthem.
4. Respect for the authority.

NATIONAL IDEOLOGIES
National ideology is an idea and movement that holds that a nation in peace and harmony. It tends to promote the interests of a nation with the aim of gaining and maintaining the nation’s sovereignty.
