TOPIC: OPERATING SYSTEM
An operating system (OS) is software that allows other applications (software) to run on a computer system.
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and be able to:
1. state the meaning of operating system.
2. mention 2 examples of operating systems.
ENTRY BEHAVIOR
The pupils are required to already have learned about the parts of the computer system which we can see and touch – system software.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of a computer system with all the necessary software installed.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
MEANING OF OPERATING SYSTEM
An operating system (OS) is software that allows other applications (software) to run on a computer system.
Operating system is a primary software that makes monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, webcam, USB flash and software to run on a computer system.
An operating system is the primary software that manages all the hardware and monitors other software on a computer. It is also called OS.
TYPES OF SOFTWARE
1. Microsoft Windows 8, 7, XP, etc.
2. UNIX
3. Linux
4. Apple Mac OS and Mac Os
5. DOS (Disk Operating System)
PRESENTATION
- To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
- To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
- state the meaning of operating system;
- Pupil’s Activities – explain operating system.
- Lists the examples of operating systems.
- Pupil’s Activities – mention two examples of operating system.
- Boots the computer to demonstrate what the operating system does;
- Guides pupils to identify different types of common operating systems and that of phone.
- Pupil’s Activities – Repeat each activity demonstrated by the teacher.
- Writes notes on the chalkboard for pupils to copy.
CONCLUSION
- To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson – utility software.
