PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –
1. mention sources of food nutrients;
2. list three nutritional diseases.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Food nutrition is the essential substance present in the food that help the body to function well. It helps the body to prevent disease and promotes good health.
SOURCES OF FOOD NUTRIENTS
Carbohydrates
These are energy – giving foods – rice, bread, yam, etc.
Proteins
These are body – building foods – beef, egg, fish, etc.
Vitamins
These food substances protect the body from diseases – fruits and vegetables.
Minerals
These food substances protect the body from diseases – milk, salt, red meat, etc.
Fats and oil
These food substances, like carbohydrates, also provide energy for work and play – salmon fish, groundnut, olive oil, etc.
Water
This is very important. About 97% of our body is water. Water helps the digestion of food and removal of waste products from the body through excretion, urinating, respiration and perspiration (sweating). It also helps the flow of blood.
MEANING OF NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCY
Nutritional deficiency is an inadequate supply of essential nutrients such as vitamins and minerals in the diet resulting in malnutrition or disease.
Diseases that result from malnutrition include –
1. Kwashiorkor
2. Rickets
3. Pellagra
4. Scurvy
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Leads pupils to list the sources of food nutrients;
Pupil’s Activities – With the help of the teacher mention the sources of food nutrients.
3. Discusses with the pupils nutritional deficiency and the common diseases.
Pupil’s Activities – Participate in the discussion and state the common nutritional deficiency.
CONCLUSION
- To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
