TOPIC: TRADITIONAL DANCES
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:
- watch a video of a traditional dance.
- identify and explain a traditional dance.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of musical instuments e.g. Drums, Gong, Pattlers or Shakers, Wooden drums, Clappers, Xylophones, etc; Pictures of dancers performing; DVDs or VCDs Recording of dances.
METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
TEACHER’S/PUPIL’S ACTIVITIES 1 – PLAY SOME NIGERIAN TRADITIONAL DANCE VIDEOS AND LET THE PUPILS IDENTIFY THE YORUBA HAUSA AND IGBO TRADITIONAL DANCE
TEACHER’S/PUPIL’S ACTIVITIES 2 – GUIDE THE PUPILS TO IDENTIFY THE CHARACTERISTICS OF NIGERIAN TRADITIONAL DANCES
- Twisting of the waist
- Clapping
- Bending the back
- Bending the kneel
- Shaking the head
- The movement of the hands and legs
TEACHER’S/PUPIL’S ACTIVITIES 3 – DISCUSS THE MEANING AND USES OF TRADITIONAL DANCE
A traditional dance is an interesting dance. It involves body movements. Traditional dance goes with traditional music using traditional drums and instruments.
We dance to the rhythm of the song or the beat of the instruments.
Traditional dances usually involves the twisting of the waist, clapping, bending the back and the knees, shaking the head and movement of the hands and legs.

USES OF TRADITIONAL DANCE
Traditional dances are used –
- For entertainment
- During occasions like marriages, coronations, festivals and rituals.
- For body exercises.
- with songs to tell stories.
PRESENTATION
- To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
- To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
- Plays Nigerian traditional dance videos.
- Pupil’s Activities – Watch traditional dance videos.
- Discusses what traditional dances are and their uses.
- Pupil’s Activities – Identify traditional dances.
- Discusses the different occasions for performing them.
- Pupil’s Activities – Mention occasions where traditional dances are performed.
CONCLUSION
- To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson – dance steps in a specific local dance.
