THEME – NATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS AND IDENTITY

TOPIC: VALUES OF NATIONALISM AND PATRIOTISM
By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:
1. explain the value of Nationalism and Patriotism.
2. explain the value of Nationalism and Patriotism.
3. differentiate between national and non national symbols.
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of pictures, magazines and textbook.
METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
MEANING OF NATIONALISM AND PATRIOTISM
Nationalism means the feeling of love and pride for one’s country.
Patriotism means loyalty to the nation.
VALUES OF NATIONALISM AND PATRIOTISM
1. Love – Love for one’s country.
2. Courage – Encouraging one another.
3.bRespect – Respect for ourselves, our citizens, and our natural resources.
4. Caring – Care for your citizens.
5. Defense – Defense of country is another important aspect of patriotism.
6. Promoting National interest.
7. Placing the Nation before self.
8. Loyalty to the Nation
EXAMPLES OF NON NATIONAL SYMBOLS
1. Traffic symbols
2. School flag, logo, uniform, motto, etc.
3. Social group – lion club, rotary, young boys club, etc.
4. Associations – teachers, doctors and nurses, lawyers, etc.
5. Ethnic groups – Arewa, Afenifere, Brifra, etc.
6. Political parties – APC, PDD, etc.
7. Culture or tradition
8. Belief or faith
9. Private laws
DIFFERENT BETWEEN NATIONAL AND NON NATIONAL SYMBOLS
1. National symbols represent the sovereignty of a nation while non national symbols represent a part or session of a national.
2. National symbols is the pride of the whole national. While non national symbols are pride of those its represent.
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Explains the meaning of Nationalism and Patriotism.
Pupil’s Activities – Explain the meaning of Nationalism and Patriotism.
3. Asks pupils to mention contributions of any nationalist they know.
Pupil’s Activities – Mention the names of some nationalists their achievements.
4. Guides pupils to relate values to concepts and features of our national symbols;
Pupil’s Activities – Pick outcomes and values from our national symbols.
- To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
Pupils to list five values that are derived from nationalism and patriotism.
