LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

The pupils already know how to form simple sentences. In this lesson, they will learn how to end their sentences correctly using the full stop and question mark.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Punctuation marks are symbols used in writing to make meaning clear. They help readers understand when a sentence ends and what type of sentence it is.

Two common punctuation marks are the full stop (.) and the question mark (?).

1. The Full Stop (.)

A full stop is used at the end of a statement or command.

Examples

I am going to school.

The boys are playing football.

Please sit down.

My father is a teacher.

We visited the market.

Uses of the Full Stop (.) – A full stop (.) is used:

At the end of a statement. Example: I am a pupil.

At the end of a command or instruction. Example: Please sit down.

At the end of a complete sentence that is not a question. Example: The children are playing football.

2. The Question Mark (?)

A question mark is used at the end of a direct question.

Examples

What is your name?

Where do you live?

How old are you?

Did you finish your homework?

When is your birthday?

Uses of the Question Mark (?) – A question mark (?) is used:

At the end of a direct question. Example: What is your name?

When asking for information. Example: Where do you live?

At the end of sentences that require an answer. Example: How old are you?

PRESENTATION
