CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Religion is an important part of people’s lives. It influences the way people worship, behave, think, and relate with others.
People practise different religions and have different religious beliefs. In Nigeria, some of the major religions include Christianity, Islam, and Traditional African Religion.
Sometimes, people may fail to respect the beliefs of others. This is called religious intolerance. Religious intolerance can cause conflict, discrimination, hatred, division, and loss of lives and property.
In this lesson, pupils will learn about the meaning and types of religion, religious intolerance, the problems of religious intolerance, and the importance of respect, tolerance, peace, love, understanding, cooperation, fairness, and kindness.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF RELIGION
Religion is a system of beliefs and practices through which people relate to and worship God or a higher power.
Religion can influence people’s beliefs, values, behaviour, customs, and way of life.
MEANING OF RELIGIOUS BELIEF
Religious belief is what a person or group accepts as true about God, worship, faith, and spiritual matters.
People may have different religious beliefs, and these beliefs should be treated with respect and tolerance.
TYPES OF RELIGION
Some major religions practised in Nigeria include:
1. Christianity – Christianity is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. Christians worship in churches and use the Bible as their holy book.
2. Islam – Islam is based on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad. Muslims worship in mosques and use the Qur’an as their holy book.
3. Traditional African Religion – Traditional African religion refers to the indigenous religious beliefs and practices of African communities. These practices vary from one community to another.
LESSON 2 – RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE
Religious intolerance is the refusal to respect or accept people who have different religious beliefs.
For example, insulting someone because of their religion, preventing people from practising their religion peacefully, or treating people unfairly because of their faith are forms of religious intolerance.
CAUSES OF RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE
Religious intolerance may be caused by:
1. Lack of understanding of other religions.
2. Prejudice and discrimination.
3. False information about other religions.
4. Hatred and fear.
5. Lack of respect for other people’s beliefs.
6. Poor upbringing and negative influence.
7. Misinterpretation of religious teachings.
PROBLEMS OF RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE
Religious intolerance can lead to:
1. Conflict – People may disagree and fight because of religious differences.

LESSON 3 – WAYS OF PROMOTING RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE
Religious tolerance means respecting and accepting people who have different religious beliefs from ours.
Religious tolerance can be promoted by:

3. Avoiding insults and discrimination.
4. Learning about other religions respectfully.
