CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Children need protection and guidance to stay safe from danger and harm. Parents are the first people responsible for protecting and guiding their children at home and in other places.

Parents teach children safety rules, supervise their activities, provide basic needs, protect them from strangers and abuse, and guide them on what to do when they face danger.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about the roles and responsibilities of parents in protecting a child’s personal security.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF PERSONAL SECURITY

Personal security means protecting oneself from danger, harm, abuse, accidents, and other threats.

Parents have an important responsibility to protect their children and teach them how to stay safe.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF PARENTS

1. Providing a Safe Home – Parents should make the home safe for children by keeping dangerous objects and substances away from them.

2. Teaching Safety Rules – Parents should teach children important safety rules, such as not playing with dangerous objects and obeying road safety rules.

3. Knowing the Child’s Whereabouts – Parents should know where their children are going and who they are going with.

4. Protecting Children from Strangers – Parents should teach children not to follow strangers or accept gifts and food from people they do not know.

5. Providing Basic Needs – Parents should provide basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, education, and healthcare.
