This lesson builds on that knowledge by introducing pupils to the use of Scratch programming to create projects that promote environmental protection, such as cleaning up the ocean and preserving the climate.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Our environment is important because it provides us with clean air, water, food, and a safe place to live. However, pollution, especially plastic waste in oceans and activities that harm the climate, can damage the environment and affect plants, animals, and humans.

In this lesson, pupils will learn how to use Scratch programming to create simple animations or interactive projects that encourage people to clean up the ocean and preserve the climate. They will also learn simple ways everyone can help protect the environment.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF SCRATCH IN THE ENVIRONMENT

Scratch in the Environment is the use of Scratch programming to create animations, games, and interactive stories that teach people how to protect the environment. Scratch can be used to create projects that promote environmental awareness and encourage people to take care of the Earth.

MEANING OF OCEAN CLEAN-UP

Ocean clean-up is the removal of plastic waste, rubbish, oil spills, and other pollutants from seas and oceans to keep the water clean and protect marine life.

APPLYING SCRATCH PROGRAMMING TO CLEAN UP THE OCEAN

Scratch can be used to create projects that:

1. Show the dangers of throwing waste into rivers and oceans.

2. Encourage people to dispose of waste properly.

3. Teach children about recycling.

4. Create games that reward players for collecting rubbish from the ocean.

LESSON 3 – OCEAN CLEAN UP AND CLIMATE PROTECTION: PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES

Activity 1: Open Scratch

1. Open the Scratch application or visit the Scratch website.

2. Click Create to start a new project.

3. Delete the default Cat sprite if desired or keep it.

Activity 2: Add Background

1. Click Choose a Backdrop.

2. Select an Ocean or Beach background.

Activity 3: Add Sprites

Add the following sprites:

  • A child or diver
  • Fish
  • Plastic bottle
  • Plastic bag
  • Recycling bin
  • Turtle (optional)

Activity 4: Program the Child Sprite

Use simple Scratch blocks to move the child.

Example:

  • When Green Flag Clicked
  • Move 10 steps
  • If touching plastic bottle

⇒ Say “Let’s clean the ocean!” for 2 seconds

⇒ Hide the plastic bottle

⇒ Change score by 1

Repeat the same for other waste items.

Activity 5: Add a Score Variable

1. Create a variable called Score.

2. Set Score to 0 when the green flag is clicked.

3. Increase the score whenever a waste item is collected.

Activity 6: Display a Conservation Message

When all waste has been collected:

  • Say:

Each pupil should:

1. Open Scratch and create a new project.

2. Add an ocean background.
