The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced May 24 as the official date for the opening of the portal for student loan applications.
On April 3, President Tinubu signed the bill into law as part of fulfilling his promise that no Nigerian student would drop out due to a lack of funds. According to the Federal Government, the first beneficiaries of the student loan scheme will be the students in the federal government owned universities.

GUIDELINES FOR APPLYING FOR STUDENT’S LOAN
Akintunde Sawyerr, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), outlined the requirements for would-be beneficiaries on Monday, May 20. Here is a step-by-step guide to applying for a student loan through the NELFUND platform:
1. ACCESS THE LOAN APPLICATION PORTAL
Goto NELFUND website – http://www.nelf.gov.ng and navigate to the loan application portal.
2. CREATE ACCOUNT
1. Create an account if you are a new user.
2. If you already have an account, log in. This account allows you to save your progress and access your application at any time.
3. PREPARE NECESSARY DOCUMENTS
The following documents will be required for upload –
- Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) admission letter
- National Identification Number (NIN)
- Bank Verification Number (BVN)
Note – The above documents are essential for verifying your identity, academic status, and financial need.
4. COMPLETE THE LOAN APPLICATION FORM
In the application form, fill in your detailed information such as –
- Personal information – name, contact information, date of birth,
- Academic information – course of study, institution, level of study, and
- Financial status – income, expenses and other funding sources.
5. REVIEW AND SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION
Carefully review your application and ensure all required documents are attached correctly before submitting the form through the portal.
6. FOLLOW UP
You will receive a confirmation email from NELFUND with further instructions after submission. Follow the instructions promptly to be sure your application is processed efficiently.
According to him, through the portal, students could now access loans to pursue their academic aspirations without financial constraints.
He added that the portal provides a user-friendly interface for students to submit their loan applications conveniently. “We encourage all eligible students to take advantage of this opportunity to invest in their future and contribute to the growth and development of our nation,” he said.
