This lesson builds on that knowledge by introducing government, the three tiers of government, and their responsibilities in serving the people.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Every country needs leaders to make laws, maintain peace, and provide important services such as education, healthcare, and security. These leaders form the government. In Nigeria, government operates at three different levels: the Federal Government, the State Government, and the Local Government. Each level has its own duties and works together to improve the lives of the people.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of government, the three tiers of government, and the responsibilities of each level.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF GOVERNMENT

Government is a group of people chosen to lead a country, state, or local government area. Government makes laws, maintains peace, and provides services for the people.

TYPES OF GOVERNMENT IN NIGERIA

Nigeria has three main types (tiers) of government:

1. Federal Government

The Federal Government is the highest level of government in Nigeria. It is responsible for the whole country.

Head: The President.

Examples of Responsibilities:

• Defending the country.

• Making national laws.

• Maintaining the armed forces.

• Managing foreign affairs.

• Printing the national currency.

2. State Government

The State Government is responsible for governing each state in Nigeria.

Head: The Governor.

Examples of Responsibilities:

• Building and maintaining state roads.

• Managing state schools and hospitals.

• Providing security support.

• Promoting agriculture and development within the state.

3. Local Government

The Local Government is the closest level of government to the people.

Head: The Chairman.

Examples of Responsibilities:

• Maintaining local markets.

• Caring for local roads.

• Keeping communities clean.

• Registering births and deaths.

• Providing primary healthcare services.

LESSON 2 – THE THREE TIERS OF GOVERNMENT

The three tiers of government in Nigeria are:

• Federal Government

• State Government

• Local Government

These three levels work together to provide services and ensure the welfare of the people.

IMPORTANCE OF GOVERNMENT

Government helps to:

1. Maintain peace and order.

2. Protect lives and property.

3. Provide education and healthcare.

4. Build roads and other public  facilities.

5. Promote national development.

SUMMARY
