ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Pupils have previously learned how to greet people, introduce themselves, and take part in simple conversations using polite English expressions.

This lesson builds on that knowledge by helping pupils to apply polite greetings and expressions in telephone conversations and dialogues, especially when speaking to someone who is not physically present.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Using the telephone means talking to someone who is far away using a mobile phone or landline.

A telephone conversation is a dialogue between two people who are speaking through a phone.

Common Telephone Expressions

  • Hello, may I speak to…?
  • Who is speaking, please?
  • Please hold on.
  • He/She is not available.
  • I will call back later.
  • Thank you for calling.

SIMPLE DIALOGUE 1

Ayo: Hello, may I speak to Bola, please?

Bola’s Mother: She is not at home. Who is speaking?

Ayo: This is Ayo. Please tell her I called.

Bola’s Mother: Alright, I will tell her.

Ayo: Thank you very much. Goodbye.

Bola’s Mother: Goodbye.

SIMPLE DIALOGUE 2

Chinedu: Hello, good afternoon. May I speak to Mary, please?

Mary’s Brother: Good afternoon. Mary is not at home. Who is speaking, please?

Chinedu: My name is Chinedu. I am her classmate. Please can you tell her to call me?

Mary’s Brother: Yes, I will tell her. Do you want her to call you on this number?

Chinedu: Yes, please. Thank you very much.

Mary’s Brother: You are welcome. Goodbye.

Chinedu: Goodbye.
