4. Lesson Evaluation and Weekly Assessment (Test)

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective or psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. measure in metric system the length and breadth of common objects and things;

2. record their measurements in tabular form; and compute the areas of the objects and things.

ENTRY BEHAVIOR

The pupils can identify some of the tools used for measuring length.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of –

meter rule, tape rule, desks and tables in the classroom, string, pieces of thread, notebook, and pencil.

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITY 1

Teacher’s Activities – Display sample some of the tools used for measurement for the pupils to identify and state the uses. For example – ruler, measuring tape, etc. Also, help them to notice the important features measuring tools.

Pupil’s Activities – This is rule. It is used for drawing and measuring lines. This measuring tape is used by tailor and other…. This one is…

Teacher’s Activities – Listen and participate in pupil’s discussion and give them one great clap. Introduce the lesson and discuss the meaning of measurement and write on the board.

MEANING OF MEASUREMENT

Measurement is the assignment of a number to a characteristic of an object or event, which can be compared with other objects or events.

ACTIVITY 2

Teacher’s Activities –

  • Group the pupils into two or more depending on the size of the class.
  • Provide each group with the necessary materials such as writing materials, rulers and measuring tape.
  • Give each group two or more rectangular shape.
  • Under guided instructions, as the pupils to measure all the lengths and compare the lengths of each shape.
  • Ask them to find and state the difference.
  • Call one of the group member for presentation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the group activities. Pupil’s Report – Each shape has two lengths of different sizes.

Teacher’s remark – Monitor, listen and celebrate the pupils for their activities participation. The longest length is called length and the shortest length is called width or breadth. Ask them, what is the measurement of length and width of the shapes.

ACTIVITY 3

Engage the pupils to measure the length and width of their classroom.

ASSIGNMENT

Find out the length and width of table and bed.

Note – Ask the pupils to measure the length and width of objects with no risk. Avoid ask them to measure the length of the door, window, any electronic and object in the kitchen, etc. This is for the pupils safety at home.

LESSON 2 – INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITY 1

Teacher’s Activities – Ask the pupils to state the length and width of table and bed in their home. Record them on a chart if the size of the class is small. In a large class, pick at random.

  • Engage the pupils multiplication activities.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in multiplication activities.

Teacher’s remark – Participate actively, comment and celebrate the pupils active participation. Introduce lesson – AREA OF SHAPES

ACTIVITY 2

Teacher’s Activities – Group in the pupils into two or more groups depending on the size of the class and ask ask them –

  • Measure the length and breadth (width) of the following in centimetres and record the values in the table to the right. That’s,

LENGTH (cm/m)        WIDTH (cm/m)      AREA (cm²/m²)

1.

2.

  • Multiply the length and width and record in area column.

Teacher’s Activities – For active participation, one clap cheer for yourself. When length and width of a shape are multiply together, the result is known as area of the shape/object. Ask the pupils, how is area of a shape can be determined. Listen to them and note on the board.

AREA OF A SHAPE/OBJECT

Area (A) = Length (L) x Breadth (B)

That’s

A = L x B

Measuring the length and breadth of objects in metric.

In science, we always measure in the metric system of units.

The standard unit for measurement of length is meter. Apart from the meter, we have various units such as a meter, kilometer, millimeter, feet, inches, and so on. Meter is also called the SI unit of length or base unit of length.

ASSIGNMENT

Find the area of table and bed in your home.

LESSON 3 – INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES

Teacher’s Activities – Based on their previous, ask the pupils to confirm the area of their group members. Write the correct answer on the chart prepared in lesson 2.

Pupil’s Activities – Checking and submit the correct answer to their teacher.

Teacher’s remark – Celebrate the pupils individually and in groups. Comment and ask the pupils to measure and find the area of the following shape in cm²/m².

ASSIGNMENT

Find out the tools used for measuring liquid in their locality.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Provides pupils with meter rule, tape rule, etc.

Pupil’s Activities – Measure and record the length and breadth of objects in metric units.

3. Guides the pupils to determine the area of plane surface by direct measurement;

Pupil’s Activities – work in group, use string or pieces of thread to trace the area of desk-top place the string on a metre rule and note the length of the thread or string.

4. Guides the pupils to determine the areas of surfaces by computation (i.e. L x B = A cm²), etc.

Determine the area (A) of their desk-top by computation and compare the results.

5. In each lesson, summary the lesson on the board.

Pupil’s Activities – Copy as the teacher write or instructed.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

EVALUATION

Ask pupils to:

1. measure the length and breadth of objects and things;

2. record measurements in metric units;

3. use their measurements to compute the area of objects and things in the classroom.
