CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTORY QUESTIONS

A relay race is an event where four runners run a set of equal distance with a baton, which is passed on to the next runner.

There are three (3) standard relays raced at the Olympics are the 4 × 100 m relay race, 4 × 400 m relay race and medley relay race.

The most common relay races in track and field events are the 4 x 100 m and the 4 x 400 m relay races, in which four athletes run 100m and 400m each respectively.

BASIC SKILLS IN RELAY RACE

The basic skills or techniques in relay race are as follows:

1. The Baton Grip

2. The Take Off

3. The Run Up and Visual Exchange

4. The Finish Line

Other skills are teamwork, speed, determination, motivation and ability to run under pressure.

LESSON 2 – BASIC SKILLS IN RELAY RACES

1. THE BATON GRIP

Baton grip is the correct method of gripping one – third of the baton for the next receiver to have more space to get a good grip of the baton.

2. THE TAKE OFF

The take-off in other races is the same as in relay races.

3. THE RUN UP

The run up is an approach run between the incoming and outgoing runners.

For examples,

  • If the incoming runner is holding the baton with the right hand, the receiver should receive it with the left hand.
  • If the incoming runner is holding the baton with the left hand, the receiver should receive it with the right hand.

4. BATON EXCHANGE

Baton exchange is the exchange of a baton between runners in a relay team.

There are two (2) methods of baton exchange, namely –

  • VISUAL Method – The visual method is the method in which the receiver looks back to take the baton from the incoming runner.
  • NON VISUAL METHOD – The non visual method is the method in which the receiver don’t look to take the baton from the incoming runner.

5. THE FINISH LINE

The runner is usually run and pass the baton the next runner within a marked exchange zone.

The last runner in a relay is called the ‘anchor’ who runs cross the finish line.

LESSON 3 – PRACTICE AND RELAY COMPETITION

PRACTICE – DEMONSTRATING BASIC SKILLS IN RELAY RACE

Teacher organizes pupils in groups depending on the size of the class, training and guides to run relay races correctly.

RELAY COMPETITION

Teacher organizes pupils in groups with strength, speed and ability for relay competition.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions:

2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs and uses the relay competition in the previous lesson to introduce basic skills in relay race.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of the lesson.

3. Teacher plays a short video of 4 x 100 relay race to guides the pupils identify each of the skills in the video.

Pupil’s Activities – Watch the video carefully and analyze each of the skills in the race.

4. Teacher explains and trains pupils on the skills.

5. Teacher organizes another relay competition for the pupils to each of the skills correctly.

Pupil’s Activities – Take active part in the training and competition.

6. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board with appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to the lesson evaluation and write as instructed.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

NEXT LESSON

LESSON EVALUATION

2. differentiate between 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay race.

3. state 5 techniques in relay races.

4. differentiate between the visual and non visual baton exchange.

5. demonstrate the basic skills involved in relay race:

  • The baton grip
  • The take off
