PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. define foreign musical instruments.

2. differentiate between local and foreign instruments.

The pupils can identify foreign musical instruments.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of charts and pictorial material showing diagrams of some musical instruments, rattles, xylophone, recorders, violin etc.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 - FOREIGN MUSICAL INSTRUMENT 

Foreign musical instruments are objects that are used by foreigners to produce their own music which are incorporated into the Nigerian music.

 

EXAMPLES OF FOREIGN MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS 

1. Drum set

2. Electric guitar

3. Keyboard

4. Piano

5. Guitar

6. Drums

7. Violin

8. Saxophone

9. Flute

 

 

CLASSIFICATION OF FOREIGN MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Foreign musical instruments are classified according to the sound produced –

1. Idiophones

2. Membranophones

3. Chordophones

4. Aerophones

5. Electrophones

 

 

LESSON 2 - CLASSIFICATION OF FOREIGN MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS 

Foreign musical instruments can be classified as follows:

1. IDIOPHONES

Idiophone is any musical instrument that produce sound through vibrating itself.

Examples of idiophones are wood block, bell, gong, clappers, and rattles

 

2. MEMBRANOPHONES

Membranophone is any musical musical instrument that produces sound vibrating a membrane.

Examples of membranophones are Drums, tambourines, and some gongs.

 

3. CHORDOPHONES

Chordophone is any musical instrument that produce sound by vibrating strings.

It is divided into five basic types – bows, harps, lutes, lyres, and zither.

 

4. AEROPHONES

Aerophones is any musical instrument that produce sound by blowing or vibrating air.

Examples of aeroplanes are whistle, sexophone, flute, bassoon, clarinet and oboe.

 

5. ELECTROPHONES

Electrophones is any musical instrument that produce sound by electronic means.

Examples of aeroplanes are guitars, pianos, etc.

 

 

LESSON 3 - METHODS OF PLAYING FOREIGN MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS 

Foreign musical instruments are played as follows:

1. Shaking – Maracas, tambourine, etc.

2. Beating and hitting – Timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, triangle and tambourine.

3. Rubbing – Violin

4. Blowing in air – Recorders, flutes, oboes, clarinets, saxophones, and bassoons, horns, trumpets, trombones, euphoniums, and tubas.

5. Strucking – Guitar

 

IMPORTANCE OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

The importance of local musical instruments as follows:

1. It builds confidence.

2. It relieves stress.

3. It improves brain development.

4. It increases and improves creativity.

5. It improves social life.

6. It is fun.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher displays sample of foreign musical instruments (if available) or chart showing foreign musical instruments.

4. Teacher lets the pupils examine, identify and describe each of the instrument.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify and the foreign musical instruments.

5. Teacher uses the samples or chart to introduce the lesson.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson instructions to understand the concept of the lesson.

6. Teacher leads a discussion to explains the meaning of foreign musical instruments.

Pupil’s Activities – Explain the meaning of foreign musical instruments.

7. Teacher asks the group differentiate between local and foreign musical instruments.

Pupil’s Activities – Differentiation and writes down in the notebook.

8. Teacher guides pupils on the methods of playing foreign musical instruments.

Pupil’s Activities – Analyze and demonstrate each method of playing foreign musical instruments.

9. Teacher discuss the classification of foreign musical instruments.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify and explain the classification of foreign musical instruments with appropriate examples.

10. Invite an expert to train the pupils in groups or pairs on how to play some of the instruments or takes them for a trip to the nearest church that has some of these instruments.

Pupil’s Activities – Take in the training or trip.

11. Teacher summarizes the lessons on the board with appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to questions and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION
  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson – classifies four families of local. instruments.
