By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

use adverbial clause of condition (if) correctly and,

use adverbial clause of condition (when) correctly.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

ADVERBIAL CLAUSES 

The adverb clause of condition gives the circumstances under which the action in the main clause will take place.

Common subordinating conjunctions used to introduce adverb clauses of condition are: if, when, unless or if not…

 

 

Adverbial clause of condition (if)

If we know our rights as Nigerians, nobody can abuse them.

If it rains, we shall stay at home.

If you have tears, prepare to shed them now.

 

Adverbial clause of condition (Unless) 

Note that unless means if not. Therefore, it would be wrong to use another not in clauses with unless.

You won’t pass unless you work hard.

That’s Mathews, unless I am mistaken.

 

Adverbial clause of condition (when)

When we pay our tax, the government will do more for its citizens.

When the war ended, many families returned to their abandoned homes.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Explains adverbial clause of condition using “if” and “when”.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify target adverbial clauses.

3. Guides pupils to use adverbial clauses of condition “if” and “when”.

Pupil’s Activities – Use of adverbial clauses of condition “if” and “when”.

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

 

LESSON EVALUATION 

Pupils to:

identify adverbial clause of condition “if” and “when”; and

Make correct use of clause of condition “if” and “when”.
