1. identify the properties of soil.

2. describe each soil properties.

3. attempt 70% (and above) of weekly assessment correctly.

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOR

The pupils can identify and describe soil types.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of soil samples – sandy, clayey and loamy.

 

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Soil is the upper layer of the earth where plants grow.

It is one of the essential components of land. There different soil types – sandy, clay and loamy soils.

It consists of particles of rock, different kinds of soil and organic material. Each of the soil type contains mineral particles, organic matter, water and air which determine physical properties of soil.

 

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF SOIL

 

The physical properties of soil are –

  • Texture
  • Structure
  • Porosity
  • Chemistry
  • Colour

 

LESSON 2 – PROPERTIES OF SOIL

1. TEXTURE

Soil texture is the proportion of sand, silt and clay sized particles. In this case, sand particles are the largest and clay particles the smallest.

 

2. STRUCTURE 

Soil structure is the arrangement of soil particles such as sand, silt, clay and organic matter into larger aggregate of various sizes and shape.

 

3. POROSITY 

Soil porosity is the soil pore space are the small voids between soil particles that allow water to pass through.

The void between soil retain water, oxygen, and nutrients needed for plants growth. 

 

4. CHEMISTRY 

 

Soil chemistry is the soil science that deals with mineral composition, organic matter and environmental factors.

This will determine what will grow and how well it will grow.

 

5. COLOUR 

Soil color is affected by the minerals present and by the organic matter content. Soil colour range from grey, black, brown, red, etc.

It does not affect the plant growth, behavior and the use of soil.

 

LESSON 3 – SUMMARY AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Get different sample of soil for the pupils to examine.

3. Leads the pupils determined different soil properties.

 

Pupil’s Activities – Examine the soil and follow the teacher leads to identify the properties of soil.

4. Summary each lesson on the board.

Pupil’s Activities – Copy as the teacher writes.

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
