PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, most pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to add and subtract naira and coins.

 

RATIONALE

Naira and kobo are the only currencies spent in Nigeria. ₦ and k are the symbols for naira and kobo respectively. Both currency denominations can be add together or subtract from one another.

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can add and subtract two or more numbers.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Actual coins

2. model coins or paper coins

 

 

3. Tracing paper

4. Brown paper

6. Crayon.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION TO KOBO 

ACTIVITY 1 – INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES (NAIRA AND COINS) 

Teacher’s Activities – Ask the pupils the following questions –

1. how many type of currencies spent in Nigeria?

2. name them with examples.

3. differentiate between the currencies.

Pupil’s Activities – 1. There are two types of currencies spent in Nigeria.

2. Naira and Kobo.

 

 

3. Naira notes are in paper form such as ₦5, ₦10, ₦20, ₦50, ₦100, ₦200, ₦500 and ₦1000. While kobo are in metal called coins. For example, ½k, 1k, 5k, 10, 25k.

Teacher’s Remarks – Correct. Naira notes and coins are two currencies in Nigeria. Today, we are going to be adding and subtracting naira and coin.

 

ACTIVITY 3 – ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF KOBO

Teacher’s Activities – Ask the pupils some summative numbers such as 1 + 5, 5 – 3, 10 – 5, 5 + 10 and 25 + 1. Also, guide the pupils to answer in the questions in kobo. For example, 1k + 5k, 5k – 3k, 10k – 5k, 5k + 10k and 25k + 1k.

Pupil’s Activities – 1 + 5 = 6, 5 – 3 = 2, 10 – 5 = 5, 5 + 10 = 15 and 25 + 1 = 26. 1k + 5k = 6k, 5k – 3k = 2k, 10k – 5k = 5k, 5k + 10k = 15k and 25k + 1k = 26k.

Teacher’s Remarks – Correct. Good job you for quick and correct responses. Just like naira notes, two or more coins can also be add together.

LESSON 2 – ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF NAIRA NOTES

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF KOBO

Teacher’s Activities – Ask the pupils some summative numbers such as 10 + 5, 50 – 30, 100 – 65, 50 + 15 and 200 – 140. Also, guide the pupils to answer in the questions in kobo. For example, ₦10 + ₦5, ₦50 – ₦30, ₦100 – ₦65, ₦50 + ₦15 and ₦200 – ₦140.

 

 

Pupil’s Activities – 10 + 5 = 15, 50 – 30 = 20, 100 – 65 =35, 50 + 15 = 75 and 200 – 140 = 60 and ₦10 + ₦5 = ₦15, ₦50 – ₦30 = ₦20, ₦100 – ₦65 = ₦35, ₦50 + ₦15 = ₦65 and ₦200 – ₦140 = ₦60.

Teacher’s Remarks – Correct. Good job you for quick and correct responses. ₦ and k are the standard units for Nigerian naira and kobo. Without the two (2) symbols, we don’t have money but ordinary numbers. But when the symbols are add to any numbers, the numbers becomes money.

LESSON 3 – SHOPPING WITH NAIRA AND KOBO WITH CHANGE

Organize class shopping corner with different items with price tags for the pupils to demonstrate buy and selling with real naira notes and kobo of different denominations.

 

Note – For the coins, you can get the specimen or the real coins at the nearest bank on application for the purpose of academic. 

 

LESSON 4 – REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT 

As stated in performance objectives or lesson evaluation. 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Leads pupils through various activities to recognize the different denominations of Nigerian naira and kobo.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify some as specified by the teacher.

2. Uses Flash cards to show addition and subtraction of naira notes and coins.

 

 

Pupil’s Activities – Do simple exercises on the addition and subtraction of money not exceeding 25k for kobo and ₦200 for naira.

3. Guides pupils in practical experience in buying and selling.

Pupil’s Activities – Calculate change when they buy or sell something by a simple game.

4. Summarizes the lessons on the board with exercises.

Pupil’s Activities – Copy and attempt the exercises as the teacher writes.

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
