INTRODUCTION

Determiners are words placed before nouns to give more information about them. One type of determiner is the article determiner.

Article determiners are words placed before nouns to show whether the noun is general or specific. That’s, they help us know whether we are talking about a particular person, animal, place, or thing, or about one in general.

The article determiners are:

USES OF ARTICLE DETERMINERS

A

A is used before singular nouns that begin with a consonant sound.

Examples:

• a boy

• a pen

• a book

Sentences:

• I have a pencil.

• She saw a dog.

• A boy is playing football.

An

An is used before singular nouns that begin with a vowel sound.

Examples:

• an egg

• an orange

• an umbrella

Sentences:

• I ate an apple.

• She bought an orange.

The is used before specific nouns already known to the speaker and listener.
