CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Agriculture involves many different activities. Some people grow crops, while others rear animals, catch or rear fish, manage forests, or provide services to farmers.

These different areas of agricultural activities are known as branches of agriculture. People such as farmers, fishermen, veterinarians, foresters, agricultural extension workers, engineers, and marketers play important roles in agricultural production.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about the branches of agriculture, the activities carried out under each branch, and the people involved in agricultural production.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF BRANCHES OF AGRICULTURE

Branches of agriculture are the different areas or fields of agricultural activities. Each branch focuses on a particular type of agricultural production.

MAJOR BRANCHES OF AGRICULTURE

1. Crop Production – This involves growing crops such as maize, rice, cassava, yam, beans, fruits, and vegetables.

2. Animal Husbandry – This involves rearing and caring for animals such as cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, and poultry.

3. Fisheries – This involves catching and rearing fish and other aquatic animals.

4. Forestry – This involves planting, managing, and conserving trees and forest resources.

5. Horticulture – This involves growing flowers, fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants.

6. Agricultural Engineering – This involves the use and maintenance of machines, tools, and equipment used in farming.

7. Agricultural Economics – This deals with the production, distribution, marketing, and use of agricultural products and resources.

LESSON 2 – PEOPLE INVOLVED IN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION

Many people contribute to agricultural production. They perform different jobs that help food and other agricultural products reach consumers.

1. Farmers – They grow crops and rear animals for food and other purposes.

2. Fishermen and Fish Farmers – They catch fish or rear fish in ponds, tanks, and other suitable places.

3. Foresters – They manage, protect, and conserve forests and trees.

4. Agricultural Extension Workers – They teach farmers improved farming methods and provide useful agricultural information.

5. Veterinarians – They care for animals and help prevent and treat animal diseases.

6. Agricultural Engineers – They design, operate, and maintain farm machines and equipment.

7. Agricultural Marketers – They buy, sell, and distribute agricultural products.

8. Farm Labourers – They assist farmers with activities such as planting, weeding, harvesting, and caring for animals.

LESSON 3 – IMPORTANCE OF PEOPLE INVOLVED IN AGRICULTURE

People involved in agricultural production:
