TIME – 40 Minutes each.

LEARNING OUTCOME

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

1. Explain the meaning of pollution.

2. List the different types of pollution.

3. State some effects of pollution on water, air and land.

4. Mention ways of controlling air, land and water pollution.

RATIONALE

Pollution is anything that makes our water, land, air and environment dirty and unsafe to use. For example, a heap of rubbish is a type of pollution. A dead animal lying on the road causes pollution. This leads to the contamination of the air, water, or soil (land).

Pollution can occur naturally, for example through volcanic eruptions, or as the result of human activities, such as the spilling of oil or disposal of household, defecating in the rivers and streams, dumping refuse into the rivers/streams, bush burning, using petrol/diesel engines and industrial waste.

In this lesson, the pupils will the concept of pollution and how to keep our environment safe from any forms of pollution.

LEARNING MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of Pieces of paper, matches, clean bottle of water and dirt from outside.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE

Pollution is anything that makes our water, land, air and environment dirty and unsafe to use. The pupils are aware of unsafe environment as unhygienic environment for human, animals and plants. Such environments are harmful or poisonous to man and animals and totally useless for farming.

SHORT NOTE

MEANING OF POLLUTION

Pollution is anything that makes our water, land, air and environment dirty and unsafe to use. For example, a heap of rubbish is a type of pollution. A dead animal lying on the road causes pollution. This leads to the contamination of the air, water, or soil (land).

TYPES OF POLLUTION

There are three types of pollution. They are air, water and land pollution.

EFFECTS OF POLLUTION

1. Smoke makes us cough.

2. It has bad effect on the weather Inhaling (breathing in) poisonous gas can cause death.

3. Chemical waste is harmful to humans and fish. This has made a lot of fishermen jobless. You can’t use it for swimming.

4. Flies visit faeces left in the bush.
