CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Just as people can become sick through germs, computers can also become infected by harmful programs called computer viruses. These viruses can damage files, slow down computers, or stop them from working properly.
In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of a computer virus, the types of computer viruses, their causes, and how to prevent virus attacks on computers.
MEANING OF COMPUTER VIRUS
A computer virus is a harmful computer program that enters a computer without permission and can damage files, slow down the computer, corrupt data, or make the computer stop working properly.
A computer virus can spread from one computer to another through infected files and storage devices.
TYPES OF COMPUTER VIRUS
1. Boot Sector Virus – Attacks the part of the computer that starts the operating system.
2. File Virus – Infects files and computer programs.
3. Macro Virus – Attacks documents created with applications such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
4. Worm – Spreads quickly from one computer to another through networks without attaching itself to a file.
5. Trojan Horse – Pretends to be a useful program but secretly damages the computer or steals information.
6. Ransomware – Locks files or the computer and demands payment before access is restored.
CAUSES OF COMPUTER VIRUS
Computer viruses can enter a computer through:
1. Infected flash drives (USB drives).
2. Downloading files from unsafe websites.
3. Opening infected email attachments.
4. Installing pirated or unknown software.
5. Sharing infected files from another computer.
6. Visiting unsafe websites.
7. Connecting infected external storage devices.
EFFECTS OF COMPUTER VIRUS
1. It slows down the computer.
2. It damages or deletes important files.
3. It causes computer programs to stop working.
4. It makes the computer freeze or restart unexpectedly.
5. It steals personal information.
6. It corrupts stored data.
WAYS TO PREVENT COMPUTER VIRUS
1. Install antivirus software.
2. Update the antivirus regularly.
3. Scan flash drives before opening them.
4. Avoid downloading files from unknown websites.
5. Do not open suspicious email attachments.
6. Use only genuine software.
7. Keep the computer operating system updated.
IMPORTANCE OF PREVENTING COMPUTER VIRUS
1. It protects important files.
2. It keeps the computer working properly.
3. It prevents loss of information.
4. It improves computer security.
5. It reduces the risk of data theft.
6. It saves the cost of repairing damaged computers.
