CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON INTRODUCTION 

Words are made up of syllables. A syllable is a part of a word that has one vowel sound. Some words have one syllable, while others have two or more.

TYPES OF WORDS BASED ON SYLLABLES

1. Monosyllabic words: Words with one syllable. For examples: cat, book, run, man

2. Bisyllabic words: Words with two syllables. For examples: teacher, pencil, window, table

3. Polysyllabic words: Words with three or more syllables. For examples: education, beautiful, examination, electricity

WORD STRESS

Word stress means pronouncing one syllable in a word more strongly than the others. For examples:

  • TAble (stress on first syllable)
  • beGIN (stress on second syllable)
  • eduCAtion (stress on third syllable)

STRESSED AND UNSTRESSED SYLLABLES

  • Stressed syllable: The syllable that is pronounced louder or stronger.
  • Unstressed syllable: The syllable that is said more softly or weakly.

For examples:

  • TEA-cher → TEA (stressed), cher (unstressed)
  • a-BOUT → BOUT (stressed), a (unstressed)

PRONUNCIATION PRACTICE

  • One-syllable words: man, sun, jump
  • Two-syllable words: ta-ble, wa-ter, mo-ther
  • Three-syllable words: fa-mi-ly, e-le-phant, ba-na-na

CLASS ACTIVITIES

  • Clap out syllables in words.
  • Identify stressed syllables in spoken words.
  • Repeat after the teacher for correct pronunciation.
  • Group words into monosyllabic, bisyllabic, and polysyllabic lists.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions.

2. The teacher organizes the pupils into groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

Pupils’ Activities: Each pupil belongs to a group.

3. The teacher gives each group a chart or flashcards containing monosyllabic, bisyllabic, and polysyllabic words and asks each group to identify and pronounce the words.

Pupils’ Activities: The groups identify each word on the chart/flashcards.

4. The teacher uses the chart/flashcards and the pupils’ responses to introduce the lesson and explain the meaning and types of monosyllabic, bisyllabic, and polysyllabic words.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction, understand, and explain the difference between monosyllabic, bisyllabic, and polysyllabic words.

5. The teacher uses the same words on the chart/flashcards to introduce and explain the concept of stressed and unstressed syllables.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils pay attention, identify, and differentiate between stressed and unstressed syllables.

6. The teacher guides the pupils on how to pronounce monosyllabic, bisyllabic, and polysyllabic words, as well as stressed and unstressed syllables correctly.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils practise confidently and pronounce monosyllabic, bisyllabic, and polysyllabic words, as well as stressed and unstressed syllables correctly.

7. The teacher summarizes the lesson on the board and gives appropriate evaluation.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to most of the questions as instructed.

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the next week’s lesson.
