This lesson builds on that knowledge by helping pupils understand the differences and similarities among Nigerian cultures and how outside influences can affect culture.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Pupils have seen that people in different parts of Nigeria speak different languages, wear different clothes, eat different foods, and celebrate different festivals. Even though these cultures are different, Nigerians also share many good values, such as respecting elders, loving their families, and welcoming visitors. Some cultural practices have changed because of education, religion, technology, and contact with other people.
In this lesson, pupils will learn about cultural differences, external influences on culture, and the similarities among Nigerian cultures.
LESSON 1 – MEANING OF CULTURAL DIFFERENCES
Cultural differences are the ways in which the culture of one group of people is different from that of another group.
People may differ in their:
1. Language – The way people speak and communicate with one another.
2. Dressing – The type of clothes people wear.
3. Food – The kinds of meals people prepare and eat.
4. Greetings – The way people welcome or show respect to one another.
5. Music and dance – The songs and dances people perform during celebrations and other occasions.
6. Festivals – Special events or celebrations observed by a community or cultural group.
7. Customs and traditions – The accepted ways of behaving and doing things that are passed from one generation to another.
EXAMPLES OF CULTURAL DIFFERENCES IN NIGERIA
1. The Yoruba mainly speak the Yoruba language, while the Igbo speak Igbo and the Hausa-Fulani speak Hausa.
2. Different cultural groups wear different traditional clothes.
3. People prepare and eat different traditional foods.
4. Greetings may be different from one culture to another.
5. Festivals and traditional dances vary among different cultural groups.
LESSON 2 – EXTERNAL INFLUENCES ON CULTURE
External influences are things from outside that can affect or change the culture of a people.
Examples include:
1. Education – Learning new knowledge and skills in school or from other people.
2. Religion – The way people worship God and practise their faith.
3. Technology – The use of machines, computers, phones, and other tools to make work easier.
4. Television and movies – Programmes and films that people watch for learning and entertainment.
5. Internet and social media – Online platforms people use to get information and communicate with others.
6. Trade and business – Buying, selling, and exchanging goods and services.
7. Travelling – Moving from one place to another to visit, learn, or do business.
8. Interaction with people from other cultures – Meeting, talking to, and learning from people who have different ways of life.

3. Marriage ceremonies – Special events where a man and a woman are joined together as husband and wife.
4. Naming ceremonies – Special occasions held to give a name to a newborn baby.
5. Traditional music and dance – Songs and dances performed according to the customs of a people.
6. Hospitality to visitors – Welcoming and treating visitors kindly.
7. Community cooperation – People working together to help and develop their community.

SUMMARY
