CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Direct speech is the exact words spoken by a person written within quotation marks (“ ”).

FEATURES OF DIRECT SPEECH

1. The exact words of the speaker are used.

2. Quotation marks (“ ”) are used.

3. A comma usually comes before the quotation marks.

4. The first letter inside the quotation marks begins with a capital letter.

5. Examples of Direct Speech

SENTENCE – DIRECT SPEECH

1. Tunde said, “I am happy.” – Exact words of Tunde

2. Mother said, “Wash your hands.” – Exact words of Mother

3. The teacher said, “Read your books.”

4. Exact words of the teacher

RULES OF DIRECT SPEECH

1. Use quotation marks around the speaker’s exact words.

2. Begin the quoted sentence with a capital letter.

3. Use appropriate punctuation marks.

4. Mention the speaker clearly.

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson on indirect speech and asks pupils to recall examples of reported speech.

Pupils’ Activities: The pupils respond to the teacher’s questions and mention examples of speech they know.

2. The teacher organizes the pupils into groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

Pupils’ Activities: Each pupil belongs to a group.

3. The teacher writes examples of direct speech on the board and reads them aloud with correct expression and punctuation.
