INTRODUCTION
MEANING OF DRUG
Drugs are substances (liquid, solid or gas) that are used to cure or prevent illness.
A drug is a substance that affects the operations of the body. If we take drugs during sickness, they make us feel better, when we take them according to doctor’s prescription.
TYPES OF DRUGS
Drugs can be naturally or chemical in nature.
Synthetic drugs are man made drugs and natural drugs are found in nature.
1. NATURALLY OCCURRING DRUGS
Naturally occurring drugs e.g. honey, salt, alcohol, caffeine in Kolanut, bitter leaf, palm wine, etc.
These drugs occur in nature. They are products of plants or animals.
2. SYNTHETIC DRUGS
These are produced by mixing chemical compounds together e.g. cough syrup, panadol, etc.
These are usually produced by pharmaceutical companies under licence.
MEANING OF DRUG ABUSE
Drug abuse is the wrong (misuse) of drugs to get self drive.
Drugs used this ways are not prescribed by doctors, nurses or pharmacists.
MEANING OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE
There are substances that are regular as drugs. Substances are in solid, liquid and gas form.
For example – coffee, palm wine, alcohol, indian hemp, tobacco, codeine, etc. and including poison.
These substances are very dangerous if abuse because they affect the body and mind.
MEANING OF DRUG ADDICTION
Drug addiction is inability to do without a particular drug or substance without considering its side effects or consequences.
Drug addiction begins with self medication. Self medication is a form of drug abuse. It is the use of drug based on self initiative or by unqualified people.
MEANING OF DRUG MISUSE
Drug misuse is the wrong used of drug.
Mostly, drugs are used without doctor’s prescription or ignorantly, not understand the use of such drugs.
SOURCE OF DRUGS
There are many source of drugs. These sources can be classified as good and bad source of drugs.
A. GOOD SOURCE OF DRUGS
The good source of drugs are –
1. Hospitals
2. Clinics
3. Pharmacies
4. Other registered dealers in drugs.
B. BAD SOURCE OF DRUGS
The bad source of drugs are –
1. Hawkers
2. Buses
3. Hotels
4. Beer parlours
5. Night clubs
6. Road sides
MEDICAL USES OF DRUGS
1. Curative Drugs
These are drugs used for healing or treatment of sickness and diseases.
2. Therapeutic Drugs
These are drugs used for making people feel relaxed and calm.
3. Diagnostic Drugs
These are drugs used used to help diagnose a disease or condition.
4. Replacement Drugs
These are drugs used to replace substances found in the body system or used to fill the body deficiency.
5. Preventive Drugs
These are drugs used for preventing sickness and diseases.

SIDE EFFECTS OF DRUGS
Drugs prescription and medical devices may also have side effects and complications.
1. Diarrhea

8. Heart issues such as palpitations, irregular heartbeats
SIDE EFFECTS OF DRUG ABUSE
